It's been done. Been found to work but is not commonly done. Much better results come from air shocks.

Look at  the funco site.  They use them and have great success with them.

l guess air shocks are always going to be the best option but they anit cheap are they,  sometimes l am happy to 9/10ths as fast for 1/10th of the money,  l aways try to avoid getting sucked into having the best as it costs,
l was looking at all the crap in the the barn and wondering what l could make out of it  eyes,  l am in range rover country here second hand spares are giveaway money, not that l am over keen on landrovers,
anyway back to idle thoughts, l have a couple of vitara's, sidekicks to you no doubt, a set of range rover airbags and a toyota mr2 turbo engine and box  :o  see where l am going here ?

vitaras have independant front suspension, diffs are made of chocolate though
heres a pic of a sidekick chassis

if l were to take the sidekick chassis's and cut them in half just by the rear of the bellhousing in the pic and weld the 2 front halfs together so as l had indy suspension all round, toss away the difffs but leave the drive shafts at the rear, install the mr2 engine and box  in the rear picking up with the vitara drive shafts, front you could just pull the drive shafts out and toss them, keep the power steering and replace the coil springs with the range rover air bags, bend up a roll cage/frame that bolts onto the body mounts and away you go.  you could go from soft to hard suspension with the on board air pump

now where's my medicine  ;)

will check out the funco site thanks

Air bags work very well and are tuneable for spring rate. The advantage over a normal air shock is that you can use a reserviored shock and get away from an emulsion air shock. The downside is usually packaging. They also do not heat up as much and change spring rate under hard usage like air shocks.

For what baloo is proposing to doing the bags will be great.
