Yeah I was all like, damn, them axial loads are gonna be motherf%$&ers. I'd be fitting HUGE tapered rollers.

yes all deep grove four point ball bearings ;), the bevel bearings are rated up to 36KN of force and are good for lateral loads at high speeds. the input shaft is supported by two bearings and the output shaft by 3.  The bevel gears run on one bearing each, the driving bevel gear is also supported by the output shaft via the selector dog. This arrangement reduces the frictional losses by quite a bit.
The loads have been worked out on paper, but the real world will be the proof of concept. there is enough meat to increase the size of the bearings if we have reliability issues later.  ;D

Are the bearings you're using expensive compared to say, wheel bearings out of an F-150?
