Consider this........... A 1/4" (6mm?) quality bolt/screw will support a 2,000 lb load in shear.  That's a flippin Volkswagen hanging on it.  There's more to the story than they're telling.  Especially in double shear.
Yeah as Chris said the guy was probably going up through the gears and got confused and instead of going up he went down, let the clutch out and locked up and spat the idler out on the road.

Yep, like Dougs. Chain'll snap looong before that goes anywhere...

The person we have been talking about stated he was downshifting on tarmac, and a bit of compression lockup over-loaded the bolt and sheared it through. Now he uses much heavier hardware, or avoids using idlers all together.

Yeah I know I just didn't want to mention any names, and it's damn easy to do I did the same sorta thing in the piranah ::) but I didn't have an idler in that and didn't do any damage.

I have a question that has been really bugging me for a long time  and since I drove Doug's fish it became clear ,to me at least, that I 'd prefer to modify the panels for  better visibility.   I'm not very tall, only about 5'6",but I'm not a midget either. I can barely see over the hood ,or bonnet ,if you prefer. What's the purpose of running it so high? In the dunes or offroad in general it really blocks from view a lot of what's in front of you. If the body panels stopped near the upper panel fasteners the line of sight would be VASTLY improved.

Hey Master, thanks. Man I really haven't looked into that as in I haven't even sat in the thing yet, I'm 6"2 there abouts so I don't think I'll have too many probs seeing over the hood, but I can't answer ya question mate cause it's one of those things you'd hafta ask the guy that designed it! I put it there cause that's the way it is in the plan. But also I'd say to keep the driver some what dry and a few rocks off em, IMO. Hope that helps. :-\

I could have sat on my helmet IF I'd had it with me. But as a side note Doug, you also look like a midget in it. ;D ;D ;D ;D Reidy will have no trouble seeing over it but for me,just in my opinion,it could be easily lowered and make visibility much much better. I understand the better protection from flying rocks but it's the unseen stationary obstacles that'd worry me.  No mattert though as the cars look very nice and perform quite well with the needed mods that Doug has come up with..

Thanks Doug I thought so too! I was standing there looking at the radiator thinking how I was going to clamp it there and I thought hey maybe the flag clamp upside down and voilla!  ;D Oh I forgot to say that I met Brett from Penrith he bought my little bench lathe off me and was saying that he mounted his steering wheel  and still had the horn button. The way I did mine the horn button wouldn't fit so I made another boss. Oh and I had to use another wheel. Also I set up the gear change cable..
