Ok its not dead. 2nd gear let out a big poop. it still engages and works. if I stand on it, she lets out a hell of a squeal. this tells me its spinning on the shaft. I'm thanking its time to learn how to fix them. if I remember right 2nd is pressed on the 1st gear shaft then welded to first. my thought is the weld broke. the big question what it going to take to fix it? I'm thanking a new 1st gear shaft and 2nd gear. Who is the go to guy for Questions on DTS. I have a few dead 091 laying in the shop. thought I would start by opening one of them up. just to take a look at it.

I've had mine apart ,have everything needed to disassemble and reassemble, but I also have forgotten all I knew.LOL I can get you a pic of what you need to do to mod a case to set up the trans . You will need a special pinion nut socket .
-
You will need a modded case and these special tools to do it right.
-
http://www.longenterprises.com/parts_list/partslist_2700.html is going out of business . They have a LOT of stuff you may need at discounted prices. They are very nice people and were very helpful when I did mine. They have some very useful info on their site as well.
-
I would suggest it well worth the cost to get their CD instruction manual. Very useful. http://www.longenterprises.com/Rebuilders_course_photo_gallery/index.htm
-
I have sent them a e-mail. let the fun begin. Fab, pitcher of the jig case would be great. I have two dead transaxles I can play with to get the fell for it.
-
well that sucks but bound to happen.! now you will get to see how much of that trans was actually built in weddle racing gears lol fabr and fast are the 2 to ask on those trans. transman too but he hasnt been on here in years.
-
I know it was a time bomb. I thank, I got 7 to 8 years out of it. so I'm not complaining. As always I new better. I tried to down shift going up hill and stabbed 2nd gear. pop, boom, bang, :m :m :m :nw :nw :nw

Just like a steer. He tried but it didn't work. ;) ;) ;D ;D

Here you go dave.

Cool Fab. that looks easy enough to make. I Have not heard back from longenterprises. but with the holiday I will give them a few days.
-
They have been in biz for a very long time and are retiring. Hopefully they will respond but if not I'd give them a call. That rebuilders CD is very useful. I'd just send you mine if I could find it. 5:
-
more news. after my trans. let out the pop, boom, bang, I just drove it back and loaded it up in the trailer. closed the door and walked away. . counted to ten. bang my head on the wall thumb down......... well,,,,, I tried to back the car out of the trailer. guess what, its reverse that went out. . this makes more since then second. best I can tell, I down shifted and hit reverse. .I've ordered the CD to school myself. let the fun begin. 5: 5: 5: 5: 5: 5:
-
The reverse requires no special tools or anything. Just mark a side adjuster position, loosen it a turn at most to remove bearing preload ,remove bellhousing, remove broken reverse(no special tools needed),place new gear on shaft, replace snap ring, replace bellhousing, tighten side adjuster to the marked position and you are done.
-
Thanks for the info. Fab. sounds easy enough. I plan on taking the motor and trans out this weekend. I sure hope it's a fast fix. this is the time to be playing not working on it. I will bring a junk one in the shop tonight and pull it apart just to get a feel for it.
-
Oops, brain fade. You will need to remove the diff after removing the bell housing to get the reverse gear off. No biggie though.Just reinstall it after replacing the rev gear. Red arrow points to the easily broken reverse gear that usually is what breaks.
-
Cool Thanks Fab. looks like a simple enough job.
-
that would be great if you didnt have to pull the gear stack! but since you have the tools and how to cd....might as well rebuild one of those used ones you have laying around for the experience!
-
Your right about that DS. the plane was,,,, this summer play!!Then this coming winter start building the old Baja. My old turbo Vw motor is just begging to be put in something . I had planed on buying a trans. but,, I have started down this road, may as well put it to good use and build it myself.
-
hows the rebuild going?
-
Got a lot done this weekend. cut down old case to make jig. replaced the bad reverse gears. got the shift forks set and tig in place. next step set it back in my case and set up the diff. going smooth so far.

very nice! that extra case you hd worked well for a jig! so i know that was a bills transaxle build. what extra things did he do over stock?
-
the two things I see that looks like thy added was a bearing retainer on the main pinon bearing. and he tigs the shift forks in place, after adjusting them. I will get some pics of the bearing retainer tonight it could be factory. but it sure looks like it has been machined out.
-
what are you setting r&p gap too? i know shane wound up setting mine at .004.
-
to be honest I'm not that far yet. hope to get their this weekend. !'m a stepper. step by step. :m :m :m :m
-
Az Transaxle set me up with a cut case. It was cut on both sides like that.
-
Ya,post a pic of the retainer .
-
This is the retainer I was talking about. it could be a thrust bearing insert as well.

That is a sleeve for the piñon bearing. What happens is the hole gets egged out from the thrust. So to save the case you bore the hole out and put a sleeve in it. When putting the bearing back in you need to heat the sleeve and use a press to make sure it goes in all the way.

thanks Dan. I thought it looked like a race that was replaceable. for the pinon bearing to set in. I hope to finish putting it back together tomorrow. If I hit a problem I have you number. It was good talking to you the other night Thanks for all the Tips
-
I knew Dan could/would help you. He knows the stuff. Thanks for posting up ,Dan!

Thanks for the invite Fabr. the problem I have, that week is the outage start on sept 23. 5 weeks of outage if you do the math. lol so the week before (sept. 17-21) I have equipment and crews showing up for safety orientation and staging. Always something. to be honesty I've had more time in my rock buggy this summer then the sand car. That needs to change!!!
-
Same invite goes out to any others as well. We'll meet up in the spring.
-
Put the sand car in the not so dry river bed this weekend. transaxle's sounds and worked great Love it when a plain works.
-
Great to hear! Now dry that river the eff up. 5: ;D ;D
-
I hear that. for years it never ran. went over it coming to work and it was dry. came back over it at lunch running aging. could be dry this time next week. lol the water shed distract need to give me a call and ask if its ok to turn the water on. LMAO
-
What's changed to make it run now? I thought we were in a drought?

its all about what happens in Colorado. they have had flooding. we have had a uncommon amount of rain out hear. so the farms have not been using it to water the fields.
-
dammit.
-
just a update 091 one has been back in the car and working well. love it when a plan comes together.
