Title: Foggies ZX14 Cudax
Post by: Foggy on April 02, 2009, 05:34:37 AM
How is this going to be different to the rest of the Barracuda builds I hear you say? Well I am putting in a extra 100mm in the engine bay as well as the cockpit so that is a total of 200mm stretch. Why? I want to allow room for a larger engine like a Kawasaki ZX14 I have sitting in my garage, as well as have plenty of room in the cabin, so I am not hunched over the steering wheel like a forklift driver! Next I will be making my roll bar wider and a little lower than the normal cuda to give it a more sleek look. (Barracuda with attitude! 8) )
I know that doesn't seem much but what I have found if you make one little change it throws out a lot of you measurement and angles according to the instructions.

First of all I made a dolly to sit the chassis on then I made the lower chassis. I didn't make a jig for it, all I did is made up the middle section and made sure it was completely square, This is were I added the extra 100mm for the cabin stretch (801mm instead of 701) then I attached the front section to it as that was per plan so it was easy. Next I lay it all on the ground and marked around it so I could get all the angles rite for the rear section. As I am adding another 100mm to that as well I had to make the total length of that section 616.80. Once I cut it all up I got out the trusty old laser level and used it to make sure it was all square before I welded it up.

Next a good mate "Reg the legend" kindly donated some of his time and gave his new lathe a good work out and turned up some parts for me as well. Thanks Reg your a top bloke!!

I made a trip down to see my old mate Raymond at Pine Rivers Bearings Brendale to talk to him about my new buggy and he grabbed me and said come on lets go shopping! So out the back we went and he has loaded me up with all the nuts and bolts I need plus more!! We substituted all we could for stainless socket head cap bolts.

I have thought about the problem of limited peddle room in the Cuda, so what I will do is use only one peddle for the back and front brakes, two master cylinders or one larger one?? The way I will regulate braking is by putting one of these in-line with the front brakes.

This way I can dial out fronts as I need them! :D  I will just mount it on the dash next to the wheel for easy access. Not that you will be playing with the bias that often because once its set up you will probably forget its there. We have a few tracks but so I dare say it might change from track to track, also My wife is much liter than me so she may have to give it a tweak as well.

Cheers,
Foggy

OK after a pulling my hair out trying to get someone in Brisbane to bend the bars for me, I decided that it was starting to become a really bad joke! ....... So, I gave Tony a ring and put in an order for my custom bar work, because I am also helping DeRat build his at the same time it made the shipping cost a lot cheaper.
I have used the Hypersprint roll bar to give it a wider body and a chop top look as it is a little shorter than the standard bar. Because I put the extra 100 in the cockpit and also the engine bay all the other bars had to be modified as well!!

After a bit of a wait for them they finally arrived at my place! :D  You beauty I can finally turn my 2 dimensional base frame into a 3 dimensional chassis and start building upwards!! :D
But as my normal luck would have it my wife had to work all bloody weekend so I was stuck with the kids :x , so I didn't get as much done as I wanted!

Anyway here are some photos so far!

Bar work.

Great progress. Looking very good. I do wish you guys would learn to build without square tube tho! LOL!!!  I'm sure you will have a blast with those toys.

iF USING A BIAS VALVE YOU WILL ONLY USE 1 mc FOR THE BRAKES. Caps lock-sorry.

Also Are you concerned about cooling with the radiator placed where it is?

I like the look of your stretches.  Are you doing both the same?  It looks like you lowered the roof a bit, but it just must be the stretch.  Do you plan to move the motor as far forward as possible to get a longer chain length?  Also, now with the motor set in place, would it have fit without the stretch or was it necessary?  I am just curious how much bigger the ZX may be than a busa or other motor.  It seems they are all similar, but I am starting a build and want to provide room for any in line 4 MC powerplant.

In that last picture the output sprocket on the ZX seems a bit high, but it may be an illusion of the photo.  Is there clearance for the chain or will the front bulkhead need to be modified?

Your doing an impeccable job of documenting the build.  Thanks!

Don't panic guys that was not were I left the engine or radiator!! I just put them in there to see how it was all going to fit!! Engineer I think the 14 is about the same size as a Busa maybe a little bigger but not much. It probably would have fit in a standard engine bay but you would be shoe horning it in! ;) I just like heaps of room so you don't have to worry about running out of room when running exhausts and so on. These next photos might clear a few things up!

My mate Ian came around just before Christmas and we got stuck into the engine mounts.

Sorry I forgot to mention that yes the main roll hoop is lower than standard, it is the roll hoop they actually designed for the Edge Hypersrint. By memory I think it was about 3.5 inches lower than normal?? By the way don't take to much notice of the welds as I have only tacked most of them in. I will have about a days work on the welder once I have got everything in place! :(

OK its been a while, sorry for being slack!
I have been able to squeeze in a little time in my hectic schedule as of late to get a few things done!

This is a shot of the window nets, mirrors and wing completed!

Thanks to the boys at Edge they have hooked me up with a set of Wilwood front brakes with massive front rotors! This is an option I would definitely recommend!!

I love the new profile the cuda has with the added lengths.

I wonder how the window netting would work for a standard cuda. I was wanting to do mine like that.

Hey Chris,

Yes mate it does fit but you have to mount it on the out side of the chassis because it is just a little long!
Biggans did a similar mount using these nets and his cabin is about standard length!

Hey Foggy beautiful work.
I do have a design question on the Barracuda's steering though.
I've noticed on Barracuda's that the upper and lower 3/4 heims are not splayed back equally in relation to the chassis centerline.
The lower arm's 3/4 heim is perpendicular to the chassis centerline and the upper's heim is angled rearward.
The difference between these angles (approx. 10 degrees) is steering angle that is lost.  The High Missalignment Spacers only provide around 62 degrees of angle before they foul.
Is the Barracuda's steering limited to around 52 degrees total?
Does the rack bottom before the heims foul on the HMS?

The turning circle is very limited but then again it's meant to be driven on the dirt side ways..

Just 2 questions.
1) Is the Barracuda's steering limited to around 52 degrees total?
2) Does the rack bottom before the heims foul on the HMS?

To be perfectly honest with ya Rick I've only done my mock up and pay too much attention, which isn't a good thing I know but I was gonna wait till I could get it on the ground to see how it sits and then move it through it's range of movements, cause if I let the gas out of the shocks I don't know where to get it refilled.
Title: Re: Foggies ZX14 Cudax
Post by: Rick S. on September 11, 2009, 11:11:01 AM
I just spent the past couple hours investigating this and here is what I find.
The Barracuda's upper arm 3/4 heim will foul on it's HMS when the outside wheel turns approx. 22 degrees.  At this point the inside wheel is approx 25 degrees with at least 6 degrees clearance to it's HMS.  On a plans built Cuda the upper 3/4 heim will foul on its HMS well before the rack reaches full lock.

I'm not trying to pick the Barracuda apart.
It's just that I've been asked to look into an alternative for The Edge rack.
What I'd really like is to have someone verify my findings.
I'm looking at making a rack with 1 1/2 turns lock to lock for around half the price of the spec'd. rack.  The rack would limit the travel.  Not the HMS.

Rick, Doug Heim can help you with turned fittings to weld into the end of the upper a-arm to bring the heim back perpendicular to the chassis' longitudinal centreline, and he's got some custom billet racks too...
Title: Re: Foggies ZX14 Cudax
Post by: Rick S. on September 11, 2009, 04:47:18 PM
From what I've been told the Edge racks are too quick on the ratio.
Not sure what Doug's ratio is. But $400 is a bit much and 3/8 turn from center to lock is too fast.

If you bring the upper heim perpendicular the HMS is still going to foul before the Edge rack reaches full lock.  Actually they both need to be angled back around 2 1/2 degrees to center the full travel.
Even if you optimise everything the heims will foul.

The rack needs a stop.

Or better yet, it needs to be redesigned with the right travel and a slower ratio.

First off Great Build my friend. Top work there! good to see it on its final stage.

Second, Yes a slower rack would be nice and I'm sure you have seen the racks I recently put out. Those are all gone and now I too am designing a new Rack that will be cheaper than the XRV rack. Allot of cost went into the last racks with top quality bearings, seals, brass stock, 7075 Aluminum, boots, gears, tierod ends.

I have since been working with a local company to custom cut me gears at a hell of a good price and All the programing is done for the next batch. I also found better priced boots and tierod ends. I just need to change a few locations and bores to suit different size gears and find the time.

As it is mentioned above I did redesign the upper A-arm with the Angle in question matched to the lower A-arm. Not just the weld bung was changed but I reworked the jig as well as to rotate the joint at the pivot to not disturb the castor too much and add for room with the jam nuts on the Castor adjuster (dont even get me started with the castor adjuster). Before, the Upper HMS would contact the rod end housing. I think this is why Edge uses aluminum HMS so they wear in as my Cuda did. Now with the new arms the rack does bottom and limit the steering like it should. Ill have to wait until reassembly to get you an exact # of turn degrees, but it is far greater than if built to plans.

I use a 13" steering wheel on the Cuda and even with the Standard XRV Gearing I have never felt fatigue in my arms or hands. I do agree that a slower rack would help make the ride more enjoyable. Too many little movements with your hands and allot happens real quick.

Sorry for repeating what some has already said, Just my 25 cents today.

GREAT BUILD!!!!! Better colors!  8) 8) 8)

Thanks guys! ;D Yes Rick the steering I must admit has always been a bit of a concern with the Edge rack, as I am used to the ratio of a cut down Ford Escort rack. The number 2 chassis which ironically I finished before the number 1  ??? we used the old style uprights and we found the steering stiff, especially with the larger 30" front tires. I have used the new design front uprights on this one and they have improved the steering 10 fold!! I can just about turn it from lock to lock with one finger!!

Thanks once again guys for your compliments it makes you feel like you have done something rite!! ;)

Yes Doug I couldn't go past the Kwaka green being a Kawasaki!! I am in the process of cutting out all the lexan panels at the moment, so you will see a bit more green in it soon!! ;)

Cheers,
Foggy

My new uprights for the front have the plates relieved to reduse the fowling on the Nut housing on the lower Arm. Is this what the upgraded Upright is set up like? I would think that is the only thing that could be done to improve steering with the Upright only. I guess the plates could be spread apart further as well.

Yes, You are doing somthing right. Looks good from over here. The new front brakes look good too. I liked them back when I seen them on Jets build but I see no real BIG reason for them. As it is I can lock up the front with Edges Double piston caliper and the stock rotors. I understand that your running larger tires and rims. Is this the main reason?

Again... congratulations on a well put together project  8)

Doug, the new uprights use different geometry to counter the different geometry presented by 30" wheels, The bigger brakes are to counter the bigger wheel's and increase breaking performance, I've found I'm out braking most people in CAMS racing, I'm assuming it's because i weigh less, but Having brakes that will pull you up from 200km/h all day long is a little reassuring.

Don't worry Masterfabr I wont be going overboard with the green!! ;) Why use 30" wheels??.....Because it gives you a bit more ground clearance and you find that the pot hole you normally fall into with the smaller tires you glide over with the bigger ones. Not to mention that they also look shit hot!!! ;D

Thank You!!!!!! ;D
Same effect as using exaggerated rake gives with small diameter tires. The larger the diameter the easier the tire will follow the ground contours and cross over obstacles. Larger diameter ,in general,is better than exaggerated rake if given the choice.

Thanks for the info Guys.

I would like to think and do agree that in the dirt the taller tires and rims are much much better, I just ordered 27" front tires for my Cuda (sand tires) and I tought those would be huge for the sand on this scale of car. In the sand there is not too many pot holes. I have often heard that bigger the brakes the better and common sence agrees. The floating Rotors are also an upgrade and look good.

So re you and Jet going to line these bad boys up?

Oh and Master.... you will hate my fnished buggy as far as color goes  ;) ;)

I am a member of the monster army and I have put up some photos there, so I am hoping I might get something from them in the future??? I will be getting quite a bit of exposure for them here in Australia and not to mention the photos that will be going on our website and forums!............. I didn't do it but to chase the sponsor I really just like the look! ;)

I too am just a fan but I am good friends with one of the teams that they sponsor. Ill see if I can put a word out. If you were not in Aus. I could ship you some monster samples too. I should be carefull here. I cant offer samples to everyone  8)

Last haul I got about 20 cases of all different types of monster. I also just recently got some monster shooters. I often get to try new stuff before its offered to the public. My newest novelty is "monster tour water". It is given to the race teams and sponsorships so that if they want to drink a water, its in a monster can. Sneaky huh?

I do like the look and colors of Monster's design. I have stickers, shot glasses, paper cups, and such if your intrested as well, all I ask is you pay shipping. Right now I have been begging for a monster refrigerator with the glass door. They have a couple at the shop and wont let them go  :'(

Great looking machine!
