The Shitbox, my 1996 Jeep Cherokee
« on: May 16, 2025, 05:10:56 PM »
So, all of you know the shitbox, and Many of you have even had the fortunate chance to end up on a tow rope behind it. But, many of you have all seen the finished product but never the fun behind the scenes stuff that i do with it on a daily basis or the building in between our dunes trips. So, heres a "build" thread for both the first shitbox, its adventures and then its failure... and eventually leading into the current jeep. Whenever i start on the 2 door, ill make a thread about that one as well  5:

heres the day i brought it home

and beginning the project of stripping the interior and exterior

just a little bit of rust. Probably should have found a cleaner one but for $400 i wasnt going to complain.

new floor pans going in. Home depot metal selection is open weekends and while its more expensive, it worked perfectly when massaged with a hammer

before installing any suspension or lift components, had to test and make sure it would fly... Cleared the pit bike track with ease.

officially named...

A whole bunch of work from new springs front and rear, shocks, entire floor pans, 2x4 metal rockers, bumpers and so much more i forgot to take pictures of it was finally ready for its first trip.

Stock gears, 33s, welded rear diff and open front, but it would climb almost anything.

kinda miss when it was very stock looking

And its first official trip to oklahoma.

This is all from 2021... I will update this as i have time and add to it. There is so much more  Drowning

Also, i tried to make the pictures bigger but for some reason it wouldnt let me... any insight would be helpful!

A lot of work but soooo worth it. I look forward to seeing all that you've learned integrated into the 2dr. The shit box has evolved into a real runner, the 2dr will be like a sand truck ! Very nice work.

Had a very muddy day of fun at tuttle creek in kansas this past sunday, got pretty rowdy climbing a ledge in very slick rock/mud. Ended up with yet another broken axle shaft. If you listen closely at the end, you can hear it break. I really need to swap to a dana 44 for how I drive but... thats expensive.

Some more carnage repair pictures, broken exhaust manifold, broken winch wiring where the fan got ahold of it, broke the mech fan shroud and the electric fan... new engine mounts for both sides, and some pics from this past trip as well!

Weight of the turbo hanging on the end two primaries kinda broke them a bit, so braced and tig welded. Somewhere in there the fan blew up in my tig welder and i had to disassemble that as well and fix it...  <a href="http://www.animateit.

everything on the drivers side has to come out to get to the mount

head gasket es leaking a little.... but we dont worry about that little guy.

total weight for the trip, 22,500. Truck and trailer are heavy.

new mounts grab 7 bolt holes instead of 3.

Ole vic jr posing on the ledge.

Thats all for now! Kinda want to dig out some more old pictures and upload those as well!

Every offroad machine has to evolve to the driver. Yours is evolving nicely  ;D

Looks and sounded like you had a great trip.

Impressed they got 3 sxs on that flat bed. All of these improvements will be carried over to the 2dr....plus reinforcement !!  That one will handle a beating for sure.
