MC powered odyssey project
« on: February 09, 2013, 01:10:24 AM »
So I planned on putting a ninja 500 motor in my odyssey, but after much thought and reading of other mini buggy projects, realized the 500 is to small (not enough hp). Most of my riding is in sand and desert, glamis, ocotillo wells. I am going to try to find a newer r6 or maybe a 1000 motor. I have already stretched the odyssey 6" and I am adding trx450 +2 a arms with elkas in the front. Originally I was going to use the stock axles and trailing arms in the rear but with the mc motor I want to convert to cv's and have more travel.

I found this picture of a modified odyssey with an a arm set up in the rear and cv's almost, if not the same, as what Doug heim makes. I really like the setup and want to do something similar. How much would this rear end cost? How well would rear a arms handle vs trailing arms?
Thoughts, opinions?

You are in luck.  Why?  Well because you have just entered into the "A" arm zone.

It is a magical place where people that want it all head off to.  Some never to return.  Some to figure it out and stay in the zone with a big shit eating grin on their face.

Lots of guys on this site run rear A arms.  They work great.  Stay tuned for responses from them.

I generally have nothing of substance to add, and well, this time is no different.

You cannot go wrong with a arm rear suspension. The advantages far outweigh the nearly non existant cv issues.

for what your doing one of those complete rear ends is the way to go. as far as quad front a-arms...... just make your own. this will be an interesting build or mod.....keep us posted.    btw I agree a-arms would be the best choice over trailing arms imo

Thanks guys! I think I am convinced that this is the way to go, need to keep saving up for the rear end kit, a little pricy but probably worth it!

Worth every penny. I'm not sure but I think Lance-W here also has Doug Heim rear kits available.

Has anyone been to the offroad Swapmeet in cabazon ca, by the morango casino? Was thinking of checking it out this year to see what it's all about, hear there are good deals there.

I have heard that since the RPM was originally designed to replace FL350R gear boxes in Stadium Racers, most of the mounts line up. I have not confirmed this even though I have an RPM box laying within feet of an FL350R frame ;)

Those axles in the other thread could be changed to use CVs on the inside to mount to 930 flanges.

I got me a set of barracuda plans that just came in today!
Haven't had the chance to look through all of it but I wanted to see what it would take to build the PIRCV. I don't have a lathe or anything to do machining so I will definitely contact Doug for parts that I can't make. I have already read through so many build threads and remember some issues or flaws some had with the design in the plans but don't remember what or where I saw them. Any suggestions would help?

Read any and all you can find HERE about Doug Heims much improved cuda stuff. Also read all you can of LanceW's threads about the cuda AND the barra2uda. The standard Edge cuda is fine for many but Dougs much better designed suspension and rear drive are extremely hard to improve upon and will turn a nice toy into a real buggy.

Got a motor! TL1000R, I couldn't pass it up for 300 bucks! Came out of a very low mile bike that was totaled and I got the complete engine kit. Now all I need is to get the PIRCV done and I'll be almost there minus all the little details .
