smooth vibrations......
« on: July 28, 2010, 07:23:11 AM »
soo, does the ecu, rectifier, gauges, and stuff...... need to be rubber mounted? i cant imagine the rectifier does.  also on the back of my gauge cluster there are 2 holes that have filter paper or such over them.... why? let heat out? i dont want water getting in those when i wash the buggy..

All that stuff is rubber mounted from the factory. I only concern myself with the gauge cluster.  Remember the cluster is not sealed at all. Just water resistant.

wont be bad to do the ecu as a rubber  - use a mouse pad for a cheap source of neoprene

i already have the ecu and rectifier mounted with nice mounts, not rubber mounted.. just wanted to see what the deal is.. so far its half and half..lol..      as far as gauges go, mine have those breather vents with like filter cloth over them... would it harm the cluster to seal all the holes? heat build up a problem?

I actually use Industrial self adhesive velcro on mine.

is there anything inside the ecu that can be damaged from vibration? isnt it just a borad?

Everything is potted so far as I know. I use the velcro just 'cause it's so easy. For things like relays I like the knob/knob type of "velcro" from Radio Shack. Once put together it holds VERY tight.

I got a riding buddy that got a little "tuned" up one evening and demonstrated that a Honda ECU can be thrown up against a wall numerous times and still function properly.  ;D

It was purely scientific. eyes

Mines been solid mounted from day one with a stainless strap AND came from a very DESTROYED bike . No issues, I think yer good to go

I'd not recommend it. 2 reasons. One is the firmness MAY be too much for the dials in the cluster. Second is that it takes quite a bit of force to engage each piece so you could crack it and it takes a LOT to separate them. If you do use it I suggest cutting into 1/2" wideX 3/4"" long strips MAX.  WHen I had my wreck my delay box and msd timers and a few other things were mounted with it. About the only thing not thrown free were those things.
