Second buggy finally finished !! Pics.
« on: May 31, 2010, 08:12:54 AM »
I'm now officially burned out !!
I started my son's buggy build last September, and got it as well as mine done. I was also able to build a trailer to haul the two machines to the trails. Not bad in 9 months !!
I'm happy to say that they both run great !!
I've since aquired a Polaris Sportsman 500 engine for my Son's buggy, because the 13hp Honda just didn't have the balls.
I'm running a Yamaha Raptor 660 with a manual tranny and  clocked it Saturday at almost 70MPH.
I was so busy building my machine, that I never took the time to post the build pics here, so here's 3 pictures of it.

Nice smugglers buggies in that camo green color. I'm betting the boys are having a ball in the buggy. Nice body work .

A very nice, unique, look. The roll cage even has a jeep look from the side to me. 2 thumbs up!

Congrats on what looks like an awesome buggy ! jj:

ok, now onto the Q & A that would have come with a build thread. Hope your willing to share a few bits of info.
I'm buildin somethin similar here and don't care for the front brake set ups on the market. Can you tell about your front a-arms, spindles, brakes and how you connected the arms to the spindles ?
And how much low end power does that motor have in a buggy that size ?   too much or just right ?  Awesome lookin build, thanks

I will post videos soon , that's when I figure out how to reduce the video size. I have a 36 minute video, but it's 2 gig !! :(
The kart is 54 inches wide, and 102 inches long. As far as weight, I have no idea, but it's no light weight. Once i put it on the scales, I wouldn't be surprised if it's in the 700 lb window. I tend to build stuff like the Russians !! ;D
Overall, it's a very nice performing buggy, and there's not too much I would change. There's tons of bottom end grunt, as well as a decent top end.The engine is rated at about 35 HP, but being a single cylinder with twin carbs, 5 valves and dual exhaust, it's a torque monster !!
1st gear is a little tall for my liking, but that's Yamahas fault.
The front brakes is something I cobbled together. The spindle shaft is the original one from the Raptor, but is now pressed into a home built spindle arm.
The rotor and caliper are Raptor pieces. I added the picture so that you can see what I mean.
The single rear caliper is a 4 piston Nissin motorcycle part.
I'm using a 3/4" bore Tilton racing master cylinder for all three calipers with no ballancing valve. I figured I could always add one later if I needed it, but the braking ratio is almost perfect. I got lucky I guess.
I'm sure someone will ask about those shocks !! They NOS Ford explorer air shocks that I pick up for $20. I could run Fox air shocks all around, but for an extra $1200, I don't feel it's worth the expense for 10% better handling.

I've got video...of them getting left in the dust!!!   kick

I kidd because I care. Both work great, and once that little one gets the 500cc motor I don't think I'll be getting many shots like that.

Sound is not synced up for some reason, and somehow the camera lens got dirty. ??? But it's all I got for now.
