recomendations for metal saws
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:53:57 PM »
What would some of you use to cut steel with? Want it to be accurate, low in the noise, few sparks, and must be able to cut angles. I was thinking horizontal band saw. what else is out there?

Why is noise a concern? Pretty well limits your choices to less than the best .

For a home builder, band saw is more versatile.  Metal wood plastic.

Which blade you run.  See lost of people love the saw for the 1st 50 cuts, then calling is POS.  Been looking for one of the "POS" cause I figure they are not using right blade.

I use the the multipurpose blade-36 teeth I think it is. on the 14" and the one they call SAW on the hand held. IMO the guys that have trouble with them are the same guys that think putting a lot of pressure on an abrasive chopsaw makes it cut faster. With the cold saw ,YES, you need to treat them with the same care as you would a cutter on a Bridgeport or something. YouDO NOT just drop the blade into/onto the work. You MUST enter the workpiece nice and slow. Try to keep the feed into the workpiece the same rte as it will be in the middle of the cut and DO NOT give it that one last push at the end of the cut. Follow those rules and you will be VERY HAPPY . Also follow their rule on cutting stuff like angle iron or hollow tube. I only use the abrasive saw on hardened steel now.

Yeah should always go back and read directions after you screw up something. rofl

I've been using an old compound miter saw w/abrasive blade.  make any angle cut, compund angle, loud, messy, sharp edges.  Looking for something else too.

We have the hand held (Skilsaw Type) Evolution at the shop, and man that puppy doesn't fool around.  That thing cuts 1.5 inch thick T6-6061 with just a little help from WD-40 with ease.  IMO one of the best investments I've made at the shop.  We used it for one job and it paid for itself.
See you all duneside.😎🤙

I use a 16" Horizontal band saw  a 14" vertical bandsaw and an 14" abrasive chop saw.  I like the Horizontal saw the best however you do have to be Inovative to cut parts that can not be clamped (under 3" long 90 degree application). Sometimes I have to use "C clamps, clamp a small vise in the large vise etc. The Chop saw is qick for tube miters and cut offs . I have considered replacing the abrasive wheel with one of the cold saw carbides howeve hard to justify aas long as I have the Horizontal band saw. The vertical band saw works well for Aluminum up to about 3/8".
It runs to fast for steel.

You cant run those cold carbide blades in reg cutoff saw.  They need to run much much slower.

You DO NOT want to do that. The abrasive saw is too high RPM. I don't care what they claim.  I've read too many negative testimonials . The saws I linked are slower RPM and work very well.
