perfect sprocket size?
« on: August 18, 2009, 07:11:53 PM »
i currently have a 14 tooth front and a 55 rear...  my rear tires are 22 inches.   its not enough... my 1st gear is kinda lugish untill high rpms.. cant use 6th gear...   how do i figure out the perfect rear sprocket size? i want stump pulling force in 1st, and good crusing power in 6th..  doug told me the 72 tooth one he has is too big, i believe him, but how do i figure out what i need.. :)

What do you wish for top speed? What is your 6th gear ratio? What is the internal primary reduction? What is redline rpm?

why not do a bit of calculating first?

Calculate what?  What he wants?

What he's got doesn't work, one whole gear that can't be used.  According to the "experts" he's already 3 teeth too small on the front so can't drop any more there.  So there is only one direction left to go....
If 72 is too big then throw the next biggest gear on the rear and go from there.

Irepeat for those that don't read posts before replying   "What do you wish for top speed? What is your 6th gear ratio? What is the internal primary reduction? What is redline rpm? "

Why take a guess at something when a bit of calculating will get you to where you need to be?

No shit?  LMAO

It seems obvious to me...
1st gear is sluggish and needs the clutch to be used excessively...
Can't use 6th gear...so clearly he's geared way too fooken high...
Chicken, go to a larger rear sprocket or to a 20" tire...
I really am tired of the constant insults you hurl boost...

95 katana (gsx600f), ill have to look in my book at home for all the gearing and primary reduction, unless someone can find in online.. im at work so i cant be online to much..

redline is 13,000rpms.

i dont really care about top speed, i just wanna be able to use all my gears and have more lower end... 1st gear above 7000rpms is really all i can use for going relativly slow and yet still being able to punch the gas and climb small hills... 2nd 3rd 4th 5th all useless except for higher speeds....  just needs to be geared down..

doug-  i would take that offer, but my luck the 72 would be to big and something would happen to mangle it for no return. lol.

Say 50 mph? 60?  Give me a target. I'll likely nopt be able to run the numbers tonight but I willl tomorrow if no one gets to it first. Just give me the primary reduction and 1st and 6th gear ratios. We can get you in the right ballpark.

right now i can hit 65mph, according to a car following me.. so.. hear say?  thats without 6th..  when i use 6th gear on flat or uphill road, it slowly bogs down...

Is your engine up to par?
That already seems "low geared"
To me? But I could be wrong.

yea engine is fine, got carbs cleaned and changed oil, and air filter.. runs great..

well i dont know what to call it.. geared to high or to low, but it needs more acceleration... so whatever sprocket size will work..
