Title: DIY Header
Post by: Voodoochikin04 on June 08, 2010, 03:33:31 PM
here is a cool item for someone needing to make their own header for a bike engine..

ss header kit (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1-5-304-stainless-header-kit-mandrel-bend-tubing-/260602180351?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cad19b2ff)

Not really. Poor choices of bends and leg lengths IMO.

He's also BS'in ya about building that header from that very kit. Look at the larger radiuses in the pic.

You're right !! Those headers seem to be using 5-6 inch radius tubing.
It would be handy to have that kit in the shop though. Reasonable at $110.

I sent him an E-mail stating that he's misleading the bidders. I'll post his reply if I get one . ;D

I looked at some of his other listings, and this kit seems a bit better for our use. He has the same discription and header pictures. 1 5/8 is a bit big though !!

Not to be TOOoooo negative but that one sucks big time IMO/ Best kits will have 4-90's and 4-180's with legs of AT LEAST 6-8" on each end. Maybe have a couple of 45's thrown in just for fun also. Needs to MAYBE have a 24" straight section also.

In one of those pics on e-bay I see a bundle of tubes crossing over in front of the header and really close. I don't know what those tubes are but they are going to cook that close to the header!

Oh yeah 2 each of the 90's and 180's should be of something like a 3" radius and the other two of 4.5" radius if using 1.5" tube. I've put more than one set together. ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D

Does everyone know how to properly line up a cut in a bend so it will maintain the radius and not look stupid? Just asking cause MANY don't.

I haven't looked but does that guy offer formed collectors? Hardest fooking part there is to fab from scratch. Worth every penny to just buy one but for the small tube stufff is hard to find. These guys offer some good quality ones. Both in plain steel and SS.

I know YOU'RE kidding ;) ;D ;D but it is important that a person visualize the bend as if it were a nice coconut cream pie and you want to make sure every piece is the same size. ;D ;D
Anyway a line drawn from the edge has to intersect the exact center point of the radius. I've seen MANY guys cut it off center just a bit to get things to line up(so they think) but the radius is fooked and crooked. Sure they mate up but look like crap.Much better to correct the other tube to get things to line up.
Another tip is to just tack very lightly each tube to the header flange so that after all the tubes are tacked up you can cut them loose and easily make the 360 degree welds that are hard to access otherwise. Weld the flange on last.

Sure have. Very consistent bends. Very well formed collectors. They are not show quality though as there are scratches from the die on the OD. Most bends/components are available in mild and SS and a couple different gauges..

Sometimes I wish packages would arrive with a small tube of Vaseline. This way it would make penetration a whole lot less painfull when the UPS guy is handing me the bill !!    B=====D   (I)
