Title: Summer Upgrades
Post by: Punkur67 on August 04, 2016, 01:47:54 PM
Well i picked up a used intercooler and that snowballed bad. I ended up with an used fresh 2.5 subaru, rebuilt mendeola 2d, used microstubs, new seats, and some other misc parts. Got the old setup pulled out, cut some old mounts and tube out, and started installing the new setup this weekend

so our you saying you pulled out a 2.0 and put in a 2.5. I sure could use some 2.0 parts. lol Good looking motor.

I had a 2.0 running 17 pounds of boost and a built 091. New motor is a new sti block with forged pistons and an aftermarket turbo. Outfront said they can do their 400hp race fuel tune with 15 pounds of boost on the setup for a few hundred dollars. Trans is a fresh mendeola 2D geared for the subie.
I will look through the garage and see what i have big dave

What kind of horsepower where you getting out of your 2.0? at 17 pounds of boost. I don't want to go over 300 horse, I run an 091 box built with all weddle gears  from Arizona transaxle. but they're only rated a 300 hp,.  So I kind of want to keep it under that or right at that. sounds like yours is going to be pretty mean with your new configuration.   I run with a guy here in town that's got an outback motor rated at 400  horse with a Mendiola it does scream. I'm sure you will love it.  I got fortunate and got into my 2.0 at the right price. everything polished turbo, adapter plate ECU and harness for two grand. couldn't pass it up. would love to upgrade to 2.5 down the road.  Really need to figure out the intercooler though that's the big find. Look forward to watching your build. looks like it's going to be fun.

I had a dyno sheet that showed 269 hp to the tires but after talking with John at Outfront he said there is no way. He said it was probably closer to that horsepower at the flywheel.  I trust him since building these motors is his specialty and he has built tons of them. He said lots of places manipulate the dyno to show better numbers. I got a steal on my motor too. I paid $2600 for the turnkey motor, adaptor, dual disk clutch, and ron davis radiator. And the motor came with a rebuild sheet from outfront showing a brand new STI block and aftermarket forged pistons. I may be interested in selling the intercooler setup i have. The outfront setup would leave me a little more room to lay the radiator down more. I am excited to drive the new setup for sure. My plan is to have the deck closed on my motor next summer so i can turn the boost up and get closer to 500hp.

Picked up the new fuel tank last Monday and started mounting it. Also drew up the new rear trailing arms with a buddy yesterday. He has some fine tuning to do before we cut them but we have the basic design figured out now.

I would shitcan the bushing inner. If you ever need to adjust it, the bushing will not. Uniball's work much better.

I am bolting these to the existing trailing arm tube and did not want to remove the existing mounts if possible. I thought about the uniballs but was not sure if the arms would retain the same arc if the inner pivot could rotate. Have you ever built arms with them?

Thanks. That is good to hear. I was going to message you to ask but did not get a chance.

the mouning points on the chassis dictate arc during trailering arm swing so the uniballs won't change the angle or direction the trailing arm swings. they will just give you the ability to adjust tow and camber way easier than the bushing which does allow for a little but not much adjustment. you'll have to make spacer to fit in to the pivot pocket.

Every once in a while it happens. Yummi is looking into it this weekend when he gets time. We haven't been able to find out why it happens so far though. Seems to be a random thing. Yummi can likely save at least part of the thread if you PM him. I think he's a bit busy but may get you back up pretty quickly. We do apologize though.

The only thing I can suggest is to not try to upload large pics without resizing first. I always resize mine to about 40% full size. I have had some of my pics lock up a thread but since I have been resizing pics it hasn't happened.

Got some stuff done this weekend. I finished the coolant lines, welded seat mounts, built most of the driver side trailing arm, cut out the old shock mounts, installed new C pillars so the shock mounts can be installed. Also started mocking up the shocks. I did a VERY rough sketch on PDF. I will be rounding some corners and cleaning the design up but what do you guys think? I am planning on using 3/16 chromo plate, cutting out the center triangle and installing mesh with round holes in it, and boxing the mount inside where the blue line is on the side prof

I think 300 is a bit much unless you cramk up the boost with race fuel or e85. I built a smaller beam car like yours for a friend that put 179hp to the tires out of a turbo subie and it was a rocket. I am sure you will be happy with the power.

I hope so, I had a Vw 2332, 5.5 h beam rods, Cb wedge mate heads. all potter valve train. 10-1cr. turboed and fuel injected. it ran dam good. never had it on the dyno, but CB specs the build at 250hp at the crank.. I'm sure there numbers are fudged some to the top side. if I get 260 to wheel I sure it will make me happy.

Not quite ready yet. I still have a list...
-Minor plumbing to the brakes and turbo feed-Axles and cv's-Re-wire the whole car-Mount the new battery up front-New front shock mounts for the bypasses (just need to double sheer the old mounts and box them in. already have them cut)-A new temporary dash to use till I get my new tin work done-Drink cooler mount-Bolt the new seats and harnesses in
But I am definitely on the downhill of the project.

-Definitely more power with just the 325hp tune. I cant wait to put the 400hp tune in it. I let the motor bog down a few times in the sandy areas and the motor pushed right through where i would have had to downshift before.
-Suspension is much better with the bypasses
-Seats are very comfortable. Way better than the old ones
-Love the headsets with the tunes going
-The agm coil sliders are a little noisy but cant hear them with the headsets anyway
- I did not mess with the ipad gps much but i do like it so far
- The new switchpro switches are very nice

Overall im very happy. To be honest I was over my car for the last couple years and just started to dislike riding. The car feels brand new and the upgrades made me fall in love with the car and desert again.

I got to run the dunes with the new setup today. We went out to Glamis for a day trip and I can say i'm very happy. The car ran comfortably in 3rd with occasional downshifts for the tight stuff. For once i was not stressed trying to play catch up with the v8 cars I ride with. The car is way more enjoyable now. I cant wait to take it to Outfront and retune it to their 400hp tune. Should really wake the car up nice!

I think their common tune is 330hp which is what I was told my motor has. John said he can do his standard 400hp race fuel tune no problem now that the motor has an intercooler.

Well, the tune did not go as planned. I showed up and was told i need a different turbo and header to get the power i want. I would have done that before i went up but oh well. John was very nice and informative. He fixed some things in my current tune that were wrong that should smooth out the power. The motor was very lean at the bottom and top of the rpm curve and had too much timing in certain areas. Im going to sell the t3 turbo and order a turbonetics t3/t4 from John so i can go back. We then can bump the boost up to 15-17 psi and get me to the 400hp+ mark im after.

that is always disappointing but sounds like you got your current tune smoothed pretty nice. now i don't know what the price range on the turbonetics it but if it's close to what the borg warner efr series is i would get one of those. they will offer the best performance for your app but they are $1700

I can get the turbonetics T3/T4 from outfront for about $750 with standard polished finish and $850 polished, ceramic coated, and painted. And i already have a Tial wastegate. Whats the deal on the borg warner that makes it that much better?

The EFR's are state of the art where the journal bearing gt series Garrett (hybrids) are 30 year old technology.
Titanium lightweight shafts on dual ceramic ball bearings (they spool yesterday)
Wastegate built in
Boost controler built in
Ricirculation valve built in
Provisions for shaft speed sensor. (helpful if ya plan on taking a turbo to the very edge)

Be sure to weigh in all the cost of putting together all the plumbing with a non wategated turbo with boost control and a quality blowoff valve, you may be close to an EFR purchase that has boost control dialed in on it's internal gate built in.

For your 2.5 I think the 6258 would be a wonderful performer IMO.

This turbo gives me wood.
That's all I got.

AND water-cooled!!!
Very beneficial to run the plumbing and keep the center section cooler and happier after abrupt shut down while adding a thermal beerier for the compressor housing, but not mandatory to run according to BorgW.

I priced put a built t3/t4 hybrid with watercooled CC and ceramic bearings and it was beyond the cost of an EFR.

Well.....I picked up a new Turbonetics T3/T4, Tial BOV, header with larger tubes, and fuel rails from Outfront. Also fabbed up a new intake setup with a new filter. My plan is to get it tuned next Friday morning and head out to Glamis for the weekend. I still need to build a support for the air filter, install the new fuel rails, and weld on the BOV.

Looking good Punkur!  The guys I know that went to 15 lbs boost, it really woke the motor up; you'll love it.
Question:  My turbo looks a lot like your new one, bought it from outback in 09.  But my receipt says it is a E40 turbo.  (I thought it was a T3/T4 when I bought it) My next step is 15 lbs also.  Do you think they are the same?  What does your receipt say?  I guess I need to call them.......thanks

I am not familiar with an E40 turbo. That may be a part number they use for a specific exhaust and/or turbine combo. I had to burn my receipt before the wife saw it laying around! Haha. I would call Outfront and ask, they are very helpful.
My T3 was running 12.5 pounds of boost. From my conversations with John it sounds like I will be around 15-18 pounds when we are done with the new setup

I spent Sunday and monday night trying to figure out why the car would not run. I found the Aeromotive A750 chewed itself up on the inside. The pump was running but only building a couple pounds. When I pulled it out a graphite looking sludge came out of it. The pre filter was clean and the post filter had the sludge in it too. I swapped the pump out for my old Bosch pump and it fired right up and ran great.
I took the car to Outfront today and it went well. I told John I was looking for 400hp on the motor. He told me a 400hp motor will read around 266 to the wheels on his dyno. After bumping the boost to 15 psi and adjusting fuel and timing I ended up with 268 hp to the tires. Definitely a big difference from my first 2.0 and the motor with the T3 turbo. Should be able to test everything out this weekend if the weather will cooperate.

really like what you've done with the rail......so out of curiosity what did the turbo and bov cost? and how close to the comp housing did you mount the bov? does it have a removable outlet so you an screw a fitting in to recirc back into the air cleaner inlet tube if you wanted to?

the reason i ask..........after talking to ian at turbo lab about which turbo i am looking for and what i want it to do and camparisons to the borg warner efr series. the efr has a built in bov and  waste gate. so after buying a turbo then waste gate and good bov your not far off. now we were talking about the bov being a recirc rather than atmosphere. now when i say this ....prob miliseconds or seconds but......ian says placing the bov as close to the comp housing is the best way to go. he says if you place it at the throttle body then the bov dumps the system. if you place it at the comp housing outlet then it dump the pressure right there rather than the whole system but still drops the pressure that would have an effect on the butterfly plate. this discussion was based on my statement of on and off boost repeatedly as opposed to on the strip racing, in comparing diff turbos. ian is a nice guy and takes the time to discuss such things with customers, not to many do anymore.

the efr has the bov built in to the comp housing to recirc for the fastest re spool response and that is why i asked. i know some will post there opinions on this and i would like to read them as it does make sense but tried and true is always better than speculation. i have found several bov's that the horn un threads and one could recirc that back into the inlet stream on the air cleaner side.   thoughts anyone?????????????

The turbo was $780 and the bov was $250. I did not mount it to the intercooler yet since i did not have enough time before this trip. It will be mounted on the intercooler tank on the throttle body side. It has a nipple that i will be putting a filter on.

Im very happy with the motor. Not sure on the trans problem. It either was already fatigued by my buddy or maybe when i shifted to 3rd the motor was still on the turbo. I put it in 3rd and as soon as i released the clutch it made a bad grinding sound and kicked out of 3rd. I was not babying it either. 5:

My good buddy had it rebuilt before he sold it to me and said everything was magged.

I would assume its hard with the throttle body pointing out to the side and the turbo on the opposite side? Post some pics up on your thread when you have it mocked up. I'm sure we can all help with a solution. You might just need more tube to connect to a similar setup or one with the tanks on the sides. I have also seen blank intercoolers that you can locate your own connections too.

I figured out where all the noise in the front end was coming from. My saco steering rack was clapped out and had a ton of slop in it. I ordered a saco magnum rack, had a billet rack spreader made, and made lighter tie rods to help prevent this issue in the future.
I am also making some lighting changes too. I ditched my light rack loaded with hellas and installed a Rigid 40" led light bar. I wanted to utilize my old mounts and do something different so i built a custom mount. Its not anything crazy but it came out clean and simple. I swapped my eagle eyes hid for some baja designs 4" fuego hids. I am still trying to figure out what lights i want to run mid level on the car. I have eagle eye hids there now but i am looking for 6" spot lights. I am looking at the baja designs 6" prerunner hids, hella 4000 compact hids, hella 6" leds, or kc 6" leds. Just torn on what to do hid or led.
