Title: MZ 243 vortex
Post by: Surly on April 03, 2009, 09:38:51 AM
Hi i am Richard from the Netherlands.
A while ago i started my buggy project.
The buggy is based on a book from Haynes "build your own off-road buggy"
I have made my own drawings in Google sketch up.

specs off the buggy:
250cc 2 stroke engine 20hp
rear differential with FNR
front suspension
no rear suspension at the moment

It looks like you have a plan!

What kind of differential is it that has a FNR?

Do you have any wheels and tires in mind?

What kind of terrain do you plan to ride on?

Welcome Surley,
Where do I know you from?
I like the build, but I think your going to have some issues, with the diff and fnr box..That one is bushed isn't it?
I think I had one of those in the past on a racing lawnmower...at 45 mph it melted down and locked up...
I like the pix, But I would suggest some more bracing on the main hoop...the way you have it now, it will pull the hoop down onto the driver in a front collision, or a stout flip, Personally I'd like to see at least a down bar from the top of the hoop the the front sub...This will also help to keep bad things from getting to the driver...Brush, limbs...Parked cars... etc

What kind of differential is it that has a FNR?
It is a differentiaal from a microcar

Quote
Do you have any wheels and tires in mind?
Quad tires

What kind of terrain do you plan to ride on?
I 'am gone use it on a track
In october there is a event in our village called "Stoute cross" (naughty cross)
 http://www.stoutecross.nl/ (http://www.stoutecross.nl/)
 Hopefully it is ready then

This differential has ballbearings inside.Hopefully it can handle the power.

I would suggest some more bracing on the main hoop
Mayby later on i will change the cage design. For now my goal isto get it ready for october

Welcome to the site.looks like a nice project.

I see that you have the motor mounted "backwards" to the normal way that it was in the motorcycle.  The FNR box that you have may be able to reverse the direction, but sometimes the Reverse direction is not as robust as the forward direction.

Looks like your making good progress.

If you turn the motor around it might be easier to kickstart as well.  ;D

I see that you have the motor mounted "backwards" to the normal way that it was in the motorcycle.
The reason that i rotated the engine is:when i wan't to make rear suspension later on the pivot point also holds the sprockets.
The other option was to put the engine  on the left side but i din't like that.My engine has the sprockets on the right side.

Very nice work, Surly, and a fun looking ride!

May I make one suggestion? Maybe consider adding a universal joint & bearing mount somewhere to that steering shaft, near 1/2 its length or so, meaning in the center or there abouts. That way in an impact it will fold over instead of skewering you like a roast on the barbecue!

Enjoy yourself, and it looks like you have a great start at it!

The buggy is based on a book from Haynes "build your own off-road buggy"
I changed the buggy on several points:
-front suspension
-rear differential
-and a few small things

Almost
I have to do some final welding on the frame to fit the rear axle
and connect the pedals to the engine.

Ah,yes,I remember now. I might suggest you reinforce the top of the shock mounts with some triangulation.I'm afraid they will be an issue if not done.

What is the issue.
That  the shock mounts wil  bend the square tube under load.
I' am thinking of putting a bar between the two shock mounts to stiffen it up.
Please explane.
