Hacksaw/Smacksaw
« on: December 30, 2008, 07:09:06 AM »
Another thread prompts me to write this. I've seen most people be unable to use a hacksaw efficiently.I'm not talking about the guys that can't follow a line. There's no hope for you if you're one of them.LOL! BUT for those that can and yet hate a hacksaw I've got a few pointers that I think will help a lot.
#1 THROW AWAY the cheapie POS you have.
#2 BUY a strong rigid hacksaw frame.
#3 Use a blade that is of the correct tooth count for the material you will be cutting. There should ALWAYS be at least 2 teeth on the workpiece at any time.
#4 Use a sharp blade.
#5 ALWAYS place one hand on the handle and the other on the front of the frame. That way you can apply POSITIVE and EVEN pressure in the blade .
#6 ALWAYS make FULL LENGTH strokes with the saw to keep the blades evenly worn to prevent blade hangups later.
#7 DO NOT put pressure on blade on backstroke. DO APPLY firm pressure on the blade to prevent it from SKIPPING on the metal and quickly making it useless. VERY IMPORTANT!
#8 Use WD-40 on the blade.Spray a LITTLE on the blade at beginning of cut and more IF needed during to cut. Doesn't take much.
#9 Now for the hard (for many) part-FOLLOW THE LINE.
Following these guidelines will make you a hacksaw pro and you will use very few blades.

Hack comes from how MOST people use the thing.

I still use a hacksaw instead of the sawzall when I want to make an accurate cut.

And ,as if everyone doesn't know already, install the blade with the teeth pointing farward so the teeth cut on the farward stroke. I only put this in because, my little brother put blades wrong almost every time (he's 56)
