Rod end questions
« on: March 30, 2009, 07:24:29 AM »
I've got to buy a bunch of rod ends.
I've been searching for quality and price.
Most of the places I've found 5/8" x 5/8" shaft RH Chromemoly ones to be anywhere from $24 each to $31 each.  Then I stumbled on this at a car parts place.  http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2DMAX10T&N=700+4294886568+4294886566+4294886552+115&autoview=sku   I buy alot of parts from Summit for my cars so I know they're honest about what they sell.  They're Chromemoly, they're heat treated, they're Teflon lined?
My question here is what am I missing they're only $11.95 each.

Lance,

While those Summit rod ends are chromolly, they are still formed like an economy end.  If you look around where the body joins the head, the stud reduces in size.  Then the head is formed down around the ball, and you can see that it is fairly thin.  It is basically an economy end made of Chromolly.  The Chromoly is almost twice as strong as regular steel.

Here is the Summit picture:

I just Bought some Qa-1's from Bugpac.  Following is a picture.  You can see how it is not necked down as the stud enters the head.  It also has a teflon/kevlar liner which takes all the slop out of the end.  I think you will find that they are quite a bit less than the prices you have seen so far and I feel the quality is much superior.

I see the difference physically.

Load ratings are not that much different though.

Summit brand 15,168 lbs
QA1 X series   17,955 lbs

There's a difference there but is it really worth double the price?

If I'm not mistaken Bugpac only wants to sell in lot's of 6.  That forces me to buy and spend rod ends/money I don't have a use for...........

I currently need as far as I can figure.

5/8 end x 5/8 RH shaft    qty 10
3/4 end x 3/4 RH shaft    qty 4
1/2 end x 1/2 RH shaft    qty 1
1/2 end x 1/2 LH shaft    qty 3

ROD END SUPPLY.
1-800-284-2902

Did I say that load enough?

Go to people that know rod ends.  You will find that if you buy in numbers that they will give you a racer discount.  ship cod no questions ask and are very nice to deal with.  On the average there price per rod end is about 16.00 usa for the best heavy duty Chromoly steel self lubricating Teflon/Kevlar lined end.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

Call/pm bug and get the QA-1's . you will not be disappointed and when you consider what else will be broken if one fails the small extra cost is a very good investment. The Summit ones are not nearly the same quality and are not teflon/kevlar. They are just plain teflon and will beat out and get loose much faster.

I buy from Bug as well. Good stuff and the load rating IMO is all the difference in the world.
