Title: Brake lights
Post by: Jerry on January 19, 2009, 06:13:09 PM
I am hooking up 2 4 inch round brake lights ( each has 10 leds). They are from harbor freight, th paper work says nothing about how much power they use. the manual for the   motor i have says the brake is 8.26 watts and the tail is 26.9 watts (yes i got the #'s right). I am tring to figure out if i need to run these with a relay or not. I have not yet started to hook them up, i thought my asking the question first it might save me from having to rewire.

Id say you would be fine without a relay, but if you have an amp meter you could test them first, power them up via a battery and measure the amp draw....

No relay, just run the fuse to the line switch, then to the light.  second line for the running light part, again no relay from fuse to switch to light.

just my $0.02

BTY, this will help re: amps, etc...

The conversion of Watts to Amps is governed by the equation Amps = Watts/Volts

For example 12 watts/12 volts = 1 amp

Somewhere here, I posted a basic buggy wiring diagram.... I will find the link and modify the post....

In this case the 27 watt brake @ 12 volts is at 2.25 amps.  Not much and not worthy of its own relay..... IMO.

Those wattage numbers must be for the original bike's bulbs. I know that led bulbs don't hardly draw any juice at all.
