Title: SIlver Lake 7-31 to 8-3 2009
Post by: Doug Heim on July 17, 2009, 04:12:14 PM
Ill be at Silver Lake all day Friday (7-31-2009) through Monday afternoon (8-3).

Throwing it out there if anyone is intrested in meeting up for some riding / video work, and possibly a drink in the evenings around the campfire.

Nutz you going to be around?

So far 2 Cudas will be there, I need to make some calls to see if others are planning on that weekend.

Hope to see you there!  8)

I may be there even if just in my old POS ford truck. I got a couple people who called to look at my quads this weeked (17th-18th-19th) and if they buy them I only got the truck for the dunes unless I pop onto a screaming deal for a new toy!

Will have to see as it gets closer.

Driving directions form Kansas?  Not saying I can But?

Long drive.... I would only recommend that drive on a not so busy weekend. Still be a good few there on those weekends.

But it looks like you would take 35 from Witchita area and follow it up to highway 80 near Des Moines then head east on 80 till you get near Michigan and 196 which will also be/turn into 31. Follow 31 north to the Shelby or Hart exit.

Getting into Silver Lake on a holiday weekend is a MAJOR BITCH.

The parking lot is small and only a few trailers can get in (how many depend on the size. A couple hundred is PACKED!) Its better to be "DUne ready" and have your dune toy on the back of a flatbed truck but even Dune ready vouchers are a pain to get sometimes (and I live twelve miles away)

Due to the congestion on holiday weekends MANY people now come the weekend BEFORE or the weekend AFTER so they too are realllly busy.

The 4th of July and the Memorial and Labor day weekend are the worst. This weekend this post is about should not be super bad... But if a whole buttload of people all decide to hit Silver LAke it gets crowded fast. The DNR opens th voucher center and if you do not have a voucher you don't get in if its busy.

Getting in Silver Lake is its biggest "achilles heel".

you will eventually get in, it just may be wayyyy later than you want.

Thats why I go for so long. It should not be too bad though. Glenn I drove further than that to get to LS  ;D

All Spring and all fall usually are not too busy. The busy season falls between Memorial and Labor Day weekends it seems.

When's it get decent daytime temps? Say in the 70's.

Hard to say on the temsp anymore Fabr. They open the dunes April first and sometimes its nice and sometimes its still dam chilly. The winter before and the temps of the lake can be major players in the early springs temps around here.

Of course this last week I have had mid/high 70's during the day and one night (The 24 I think it was. Close to it) its was nearly 40 frigging degrees in JULY at night.

And my thermometer aint that far off. It was cold that night.

It NEVER hurts to have a set of warm clothes handy. Even just one.

The local seven day forecasts are usually reasonably close. If you knew you was hitting a area a couple clicks will get you the gist of it.

The Mickey D's in Whitehall has internet access but I do not know if the one in Hart does. If it does not I "think" the gas station next to it does.

Shelby Libray def does. I go there a lot.

See yah in the sand.

I just got home for Silver Lake. I met Doug and John, who bought a Barracuda from a guy named Rico. Nutz4sand was there as well. I had a good time except for trying to keep up with those guys over some pretty rough sand. Those Barracudas have some sweet suspension. They go really good, too. The weather was great, as was the company!

We had a great time. The first day I tried to keep up duning with Doug and John (both in Barracudas) and Odypilots in his sled powered Pilot.

I nearly crashed my quad several times trying to follow them thru bad sections at speeds that were faster than I should have been going on a quad. I only really caught up when they slowed at sections for cross traffic etc. Sometimes not then.

The second day I was a little sore (not in great riding shape I guess so I ended up not getting out there. Plus it rained a little on and off) The third day I went back out and the airtime contest was in full swing.

It was fun watching the bike guys not fly as high or far as Doug and good few were trying just down the dune (same angle of launch and same landing area) I know Dougs got some more pics and such and we need to figure out a better camera system to insure the best shots. He was higher than these in some and we were snapping pics as best we could while one person stood on the dune face to give him OK for a clear landing zone (no blind jumping while going for the bigger stuff) and to warn the others he was coming up to get ready to snap a pic. (You could hear the motor of Dougs buggy coming up the dune usually but hard to judge by the sound. Especially with other big V8's in trucks and misc buggies/bikes/quads rumbling past on either side.)

I know Dougs got some more eye candy to show when he gets to it. Will be well worth the wait to see it!

To add icing to the cake Doug brought me a couple coveted parts for my bender he made. Which I will be showing in some pics of it cause I got the worst part of my bender done (time consuming stuff done) and with the first part Doug got me (I will show it and what it does to aid my bender in that post) and he also brought me the 1.5 inch tube rollers I have talked about in another thread so when I get this stand done I can try my roller following block idea on my PT-105. Hoping this roller backing block works as well. But will not know till I try it!

Doug you ROCK!

Dunno how but I will figure something out to make this up to you.

That said I need to go out to the garage and get the thing finished. If I get some good progress in today I hope to post some pics of it tonight in its own thread.

Put up the tribute! lol  ;D

If I were a fairy Id be tossin the Heim Joint in ya on the next trip  ;D But dont get your hopes up! FYI with a High Misalignment c0k Ring I can get her at any angle!

Ferry was cool and Id do it again. I got a round trip for $340. Was it worth it as far as time? NO! The time I had left my house (ferry wants you there an hr. early) to the time I pulled in was only 1 hour less than driving around. It was way cool to sleep on the bow of the ship outside on a beautiful clear night. The shooting stars were breath taking. All in all either way is good for me.
