As long as you take it slow, it should work out. My uncle borrowed a mini lathe/drill combo thing from a friend. It worked fine as long as you didn't take a big cut. Anything cut close to what a large lathe would take would cause chatter.

Chatter? or flying parts and burned up motors?  I got one of those tiny bench lathes that I borrowed to make some small spacers and that thing scares me.  When I say tiny, I mean anything over about 1 1/4" OD, and you have to flip the jaws. It's like a 4"x12" lathe or something. Yes those are inches. :o

No, it would pull it, just the whole unit wasn't heavy enough to take the load. It has a 1hp 110v motor and the chuck was 6 inches. I want to say the bed was 30 inches??

Guess I would be too! ;D Old iron would be good iron, but unfortunately I wouldn't have a clue how it works or to fix it so you are very lucky in that respect Adam.. Not only that in OZ I haven't seen too many old quality American machines. I'd love to have a shop full of those sorts of machines!! ;D ;D ;D

Following this thread cause I completely agree. Watched an old yankee mill, with worn bearings etc etc go for several thousand. Seems lots of people think the same....

The point I was trying to make is, if your patient, and you know where to look, you can get a great deal.

I live in the States, so I take for granted that we have boat loads of old machines flying around for sale.  I get at least one ad a week at the shop advertising used machinery.  There are lots of good deals too. (some not so good as well)  With the economy in a state of $h!t and lots of places closing their doors, there are some really good buys right now in the states.  My boss goes to auctions about once a month and finds a steal.

As for, you wouldn't have a clue on how it works or to fix it?  I don't understand that, if you can't work on an old mechanical machine with very simple circuits, how would you be able to work on a newer machine that has more complex bull crap for internals?  That's just my opinion.

I'm proud of my boss for starting a business from the ground up and sticking with it all of these years.  As for me being proud of the things I don't have...???  Hell I'm the luckiest mofo on this site.  I don't take that for granted either.  I was just letting everyone know you can find a deal every once and awhile, and I would put my money into a good quality piece of machinery.  Most of what's in our shop was inexpensive because the Chief is so tight he squeaks ;D
See you all duneside.😎🤙

That's horrible.TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY!!!!!

that gives me a whole new respect for those kind of tools.. the thought of being alone machining something and slipping.... then a loved one finding you? with the lathe still turning... ugh.. makes me sick..
