Title: LED Lighted Whip-DIY
Post by: fabr on September 19, 2017, 07:00:18 PM
I shouldn't be allowed on flea bay.I saw some 1/2"x 6' fiberglass shafts for $10 each. Got me to thinking. As we know , one thing leads to another with me. Been looking for lighted whips capable of flying 3x5 flag without bending way over. All there is are in the $125-$180+ range. Fook that,BTDT,they all fail ,I'm not wasting another cent on one was the decision I had made. BUT,here were these shafts. Must be some sort of fate thing. I got back on fleabay ,bought them,found a shitload of 300 LED strip lights that are 5M long for $10 each +/-. Next I made some aluminum sockets for the shafts to mount to my folding flag mounts.. Found some reasonably priced(most expensive part of this project but I can make 8 from this roll) , adhesive lined ,crystal clear heat shrink on a friggen 50 foot roll. Put some duetch connectors on and viola!! I have 300 LED lighted,strong enough for the flag,for approximately $50 each that are as good as any out there.  I'll post some pics tomorrow after I get them wired in in a dark shop. I'm pretty impressed. Now,to confess a bit,I pretty much copied what I saw on another site .  I guess that's why this place is called DTSfab,huh?

Yummi,remember when you were doing the flag thing on GD? I'm finally using the one you got me. I now need 2 so I order one from the same place you got them from originally. Guess what,the new ones are 2" taller and 4" longer.  5: rofl 8)

Hey Fast,

Send me your mailing addy.  Two of the four on the way, fabr gets the other two.  This way they get put to good use.

I am off to Washington DC for a few days, so a bit of delay in shipping, but, well, the price is right.

I'm making 2 more. I may take pics this time as I go.It's pretty much self explanatory though. At least it is for all us real fabbers..............like 99% of all members here. ;D  I just was tired of over paying for the damn things.

the concept is self explanatory however materials used that will withstand hits from tree branches and the pole at the entrance are a diff story!! obviously it's a clear plastic or colored tube that is being illuminated by a 5 watt cree led from the base like  a fiber optic lead.  what type of ceramic or plastic is the tube and how thick a wall? never saw a post on gd.com as i don't get over there much and in one pic it looks kind of like there are led's wrapped around a pole? hard to tell for sure

the last lighted whip i made was self adhering led strip wrapped helically  around my fiber glass whip! worked pretty good but the tree branches in the tail and overhead pole slowly walked that all loose and then came off.

i was thinking you made something like this but upon blowing one of your pics up i don't think so now.

Fairly sure the lights are wrapped around the clear tube, the clear shrink is place over.  The alum base prob biggest DYI part, but Fabr's making extras lol.

So are yours one color, did you get the changing with the little remote.

DS pretty sure this is it;

Just finished 3 and 4 in blue. Pics l8tr This is just too easy. lol!!!! It only took 30 minutes for both less making socket. If I decide to make any more,I'll buy some appropriately sized alum tube and save a bunch of time making them.
