vw type swing axle golf cart
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:15:07 PM »
I picked up a 1989 'shuttle-craft' golf cart the other day...seems like a cool little cart. Lifted, bumpers, psuedo cage and a new set of off roady type tires. Not enough power (in my best Tim the toolman voice!)...out comes the 8 horse Honda and in goes a '94 EX500 engine! Made the cart really cool! Not gonna let any one drive it...until I get some help on the suspension.

I'll have to post up some pics the next couple of days so all can see what I'm up against. The 'trailing arms' are at least 45* to the ground and only about 12" long! Being a swing axle type rear end, it has a horrible time of what I can only describe as bump steer. Get on the gas and the tires toe out...hit the brakes and the car gets pretty hairy as the tires toe in. Looks like probably 3 inches or better of swing from in to out!

I have the stuff to legthen the arms and mount them solid to the frma, I'm just looking for some input on what you guys would do. This isn't supposed to be a replacement for my 'rhino' build, but something I can cruise the beach in Rocky Point with or drive it to the store to get beer. The occasional trip out of doors (all desert here, some dunes...maybe) would be great if it handles well enough.

Got the teryx a-arms mounted and used MR2 rear hub assemblies...camber appears to be an issue, how do I fix it? Easiest I can see is to re-do the hubs...or extend the arms?

I'll get some tonight. Think maybe they should be equal length and paralell? The hubs would have to be even also, no?

How is it at full bump and at ride height?

Full bump isn't exactly what I wanted...only got about 8 maybe 10" of travel. At bump the upper is in mid swing and camber is coming out. Probably 2* or 3* I'm guessing. At droop (remember Type 1 cvs...only 12* dammit!) it is swinging out of control. if the lower is at 12* the upright is 12* or worse (just guessing, I haven't actually measured it.). I was hoping to have Teryx suspension and travel...I even got the high zoot rear shocks with resi's!! now I'm not sure how well it will work until I get some more time on it.

Pics...ummm, yeah...just got home from the 'new' job! Atleast now I get O.T.!!!! I'll post some up manana.

?? Doesn't your last pic show full droop? Hell you're losing 1/2 of the cv's angle just with the radical camber. Yeah need more pics.

That is pretty close to full droop...maybe an inch more. I'm home for the day and will get some more pics shortly.

Droop

Bump

Thinking I'm going to extend the uppers a little and re-build the uprights so all is straight. I'm not worried about a change in camber in this set-up, the cart isn't a race car! I'm only looking at 8" of travel on the hopeful side.

I'm thinking we need some thinking here. It looks like about right camber at bump.I don't think just longer uppers will do the trick.

Why are you getting the drastic toe change? Where's that coming from?
