do the $ 225.00 - 250.00  arc or stick welders even get mention on this or is it not worth talking about due to the learning curve ?

Flux core welders (gasless) are nice if you use them in the wind and for just little projects. But they are very messy. That flux needs to be cleaned off your weld after you arer done or it looks like crap. The thing I hate the most is the amount of wire you get with flux cored wire. What I mean is .030 flux wire gives you the same volume of steel as .015 hard wire (run in a gas machine). So you can weld much faster with a machine run with a gas cover. I have a flux machine in my trailer as a emergency machine of if I just need to go to someones house to weld something up real quick, and a machine with a gas cover for the shop cause its faster and cleaner.

They also make an excellent doorstop ;)

For buggies, go for Gas.

Not for welding a frame up. Stick welders have their place and its not in the off road sport. Its very difficult to stick thin tubing and you will end up with lots of extra metal build up, ESPECIALLY if you dont have much stick welding experience. I stick weld at work almost daily and would never stick my frame EVER!

hey southern!!! what is your budget first of all????  theres a difference if you have 300$ or 3000$
even if you only have 300$ i would highly suggest you dont use flux core/gasless setup.. you spend more time chiseling off slag around the weld that you will building or welding.

yea because i built almost half of my frame with a 110v craftsman mig welder using fluxcore wire. exspensive ass wire!!! 20$ for 2lb roll.... would have been cheaper for me to just buy a small tank and gas for as much as i spent on flux core wire.  i thought my welds looks good too!!! then i started using an older 220 centry mig with gas.. WOOOHEEE!!! lays down smooth. penetrates like a groom on wedding night.

since then, i have even welded with a cheapo 110v mig welder using gas. and it welded great compared to flux core.

LOL, gotta love that smily. I got a 2 lb roll with my hobart and had to use it to weld up a go kart when I ran out of gas. I was able to make really nice looking welds, but there were tons of dingle berries stuck to the metal, and those were a pain to clean off in the tight spots. (Keep it clean guys).....
