First attempt? ::) It could have been a hell of a lot worse.  What is your balance set at?  Amps?
My first weld was at 150, since I had no idea where to set it at, way too hot, lol.  I used the foot pedal to get it where I like it, then glanced over at the welder and it was reading about 50 amps, so I set my dial at 65, then I would let the area get really hot at full blast, then feather off the pedal to about 50 to make the weld and feather as needed since it would start to get too hot about an inch or so in, can't just blast it with this stuff, lol......
