alum or steel sprocket
« on: December 19, 2008, 09:28:57 AM »
How about using alum rear sprocket instead of steel.  Seeing some claiming to be harder after "treatment" thank steel.  Needing a 55-60 sprocket Kawa 600 bolt pattern, would keep from having to redrill.
You can keep your CHANGE, I'd like to keep my DOLLAR.

Motorcycles use them all the time, I think its a preference thing, it will wear faster likely but not sure...

When I was motocrossing, I thought Aluminum sounded great, so I put on a sprocket and new oring chain (sidewinder I believe).  The next race was a sandy/mud race.  Completely wiped out the chain and sprockets in one race.  The sand was imbeding in the aluminum sprocket, after one of the moto's, I couldn't even push the bike it was so bound up.  I had to loosen the chain for the next heat.  It made the chain ride up on the sprocket, and by the end of the day the teeth were gone.

I would never consider running aluminum again in a rough environment.  It might be fine for asphalt....

Just my $.02

I ran aluminum sprockets on the 460's  for ice and dry track conditions, But for sand I think even the hard anodized ones will wear faster than steel...One trick I learned many years ago during my moto cross days was to keep a 530 chain in the tool box to run on 520 sprockets...This lets mud and shit fall out between the sideplates and the sprocket...when it's a mud fest

Go steel.  It is cheaper and will last longer.

On my Banshee I could trash an aluminum sprocket in one weekend in the sand. But, that sprocket is always "in" the sand. Might last longer on a car??.. I would definately take the woman's advice though...

Short Sand Cars use Sprocket Specialists to make their rear sprockets. They only offer aluminum, or hardened aluminum. Who makes custom steel sprockets that will fir my car?

Here is Just a small dent of what I have done in the past and also have in stock.

I only work with steel sprockets. I have used aluminum with nothing but wear and pissin me off, Like throwing money away. Well for me anyway.

Anyway Ill be making an Ad soon for these...

530 chain...
   -50 tooth = $55
   -55 tooth = $65
   -60 tooth = $60
   -72 tooth = $65

I can do custom and 630 chain as well. Contact me for special applications.

Call out your bolt Pattern. Ill do my best if the sprocket allows it.

How and where do I measure the bolt pattern? It fits a SSC. Maybe I can send you my spare to go off of.
