New sprocket issues......
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:50:55 PM »
Well, I thought I would replace my tattered 61 tooth rear sprocket with a new 65 tooth one, hoping to help taking off in first gear a little easier.  So off came the original chain and rear sprocket. Then I installed the new sprocket, and as I was fitting up the new chain, something wasn't lining up.  I was a half link off, and the tensioner didn't have enough adjustment to let me either remove another link or to take up the slack if I went a link longer.  My front sprocket is a 13 tooth. If I put a larger front sprocket on it, I could make up some of the slack and just go a link longer on the chain. Or if I go to a 12 tooth front sprocket, Maybe I could go one link shorter. I've read that it isn't good to run this small of a countershaft sprocket. Will I lose my lower gearing goal if I go one tooth higher on the countershaft sprocket? From a 13/61 combo to a 14/65 combo? ??? ???

Just divide the rear sprocket by the front and that will give you your gear ratio. 13-61 = 4.69
14-65= 4.64
12-65= 5.41

The higher your final # the more bottom end you will have but the less top speed. Top speed is not an issue with the streetbike cars though. I ran a 13-72= 5.53 in my car with a 30" tire.

Well I also made my carrier adjustable. I can move it 2 inches so my chain length is not a problem

I may try both scenarios, I'll try a 14 tooth and see if the links line up and I'll try a 12 tooth also. I haven't found anyplace that sells the 12 tooth countershaft sprocket. Any ideas? ???

You could try Sidewinder also. But I think they are around $75 each. What motor are you running? Lots of bikes interchange sprockets I believe.

Going up 1 tooth on the front is equal to going down 3-1/2 to 4 teeth in the rear. Can you swap out the 65 tooth for a 63 or 64 tooth?

If you have a busa, I have 3 or 4 12 tooth sprockets here, I ran them for years with no problems, even ran an 11 tooth once.  Just gotta keep the chain dry lubed....

I had to get my sprocket custom make. I found a 13 tooth with the same chain pitch and machined the center splines of my old sprocket out and tig welded them together.

I need the car running for Christmas in Glamis, and there isn't time for me to get another sprocket in on time.
Yes, my car is a Hayabusa. I am very interested in one of your 12 tooth sprockets. Why the dry lube?

Anything wet will attract sand and dirt... ;D

It is all sticky, like grease. Not dry. The chain I bought is 112 links, I haven't cut it down yet, I still need to go either one tooth up or down on the countershaft sprocket first, to get in the adjustment range of my tensioner.
