VW091 Ring Gear Bolts
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:10:55 PM »
What grade should they be? 10.9 or 12.9 and what torque spec? This Dons bus box thing has both on the ring gear.

loyalty to the American people."

Sounds like Don just picked up any old bolt laying on the floor.  All should be 12.9 in it.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

I can go to the local hardware store and pick you up some. They sell them by the pound. They look almost like chrome and no annoying marks on the head. Probably be a bout $2.00. Be as good as what you have now. rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

M10x25 12.9 unplated/uncoated are a  rare item. Anybody know a source?

Doc that's not quite correct . A 10.9 is approximately a grade 8.

If you can't get bare ones, go for black oxide and hit 'em with a wire wheel.

You might try some of the heavy equipment dealers. We used to use Cat bolts when we needed strong American bolts.

Actually I was wrong they are 9MMx1.0x30MM . Rare as hens teeth.  Found some ARP that should work nicely made for the ring gear in an 020 VW tranny.

Ahhh, the 9MM bolts. Same as a mid 80's Toyota drive shaft. I have drilled and tapped plenty of those to 3/8-24 due to not being able to find replacement bolts in a hurry.

I got 1 set of flanged 12.9 from a waterboxer. Very nice pieces. I'm looking for a second set tho of the ones from a waterboxer. Are the correct/stock 091 ones 12.9 and flanged also? If so I'll buy a set from you.
The tranny is going together nicely . They're not hard at all to work on IF a person is willing to buy the special tools/manuals/jigs necessary to do the work. Without them you're just pissing in the wind . Since I'm going to do more than one of these I felt it best for me to dive in and buy the stuff.I also got to see first hand the fooking Donsbusbox gave me.  thumb down thumb down thumb down thumb down
