Tube Notchers - Under 1000 dollars
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:14:43 AM »
What have you used and what have you liked and not liked.............

I'd really like to find a tool that I could use and think to myself "Damn that is one very nice tool"  so far the one I have used worked but wasn't "great"

I've used one of these.  I used it in a vise to hold it not a drill press.  I used it with a high quality 1/2" drill motor.  If you changed the hole saw often it had no problem cutting thru tube.  The one issue I did have with it was that if the hole saw grabbed, the bearing block that the hole saw spindle runs in would get yanked out of alignment with the center of the tube clamping block.  The bolts on the right side of the picture didn't have enough rubustness? to hold the bearing block.
Pro-Tools Cost :$239

Has anybody used one of these?  I'm wondering if it's worth twice the price of the other one above?
Baileigh Cost: $595

I have just used one like you have and it does OK, not perfect, but I am able to use a belt sander to dress up the joint and do pretty good.  I had to shim mine out a little to get it to cut in the center of the tube.

I imagine the 2nd one might be more precise.  My experience is that the problem is in my getting the angle estimate closer is the biggest factor then I have to do the trim and fit until I got it.  Just a hack here!  Good luck!
You smell that?

Saw the one from low buck tools in person. More of a nibbler. Put tube in pull down handle and it punches out a slug flip and do other side. No drill bits no sparks just muscle. Be a handful with some 1.5 120 wall though.
You can keep your CHANGE, I'd like to keep my DOLLAR.

Quite fast and easy...I've been singing it's praises for years but nobody listened For a 90* joint...15 seconds and a perfect fit

I like the looks of the Balleigh but see some limitations  IMO. I like the one I got from Trick-Tools.

How is the pivot fastened together and can you clamp it rigid to maintain the same angle cut after cut (the pictures aren't the greatest)?

Extremely rigid. One Timken bearing clamp bolt to adjust angle. NEVER had it slip and only takes a slight amount of pressure to lock it in place. The saw is held so rigid I can do a complete chassis with only 1 holesaw ,no tooth loss and cutting dry with no lube.

Wow I must have went thru at least a dozen hole saws on Samantha's.  That in itself is significant.

That's why I mentioned it. It is so rigid I can even "mill" the notch with a paring cut if necessary. I love it. There is a small drawback tho. You MUST clear the chips from the tube clamp slide or it will clog .  Not an issue if doing all same size tubes but if needing to go from 1 1/4 to say 1 1/2 you may have to clear chips first. Not a big deal considering,IMO, the plusses it offers.
