vw axles

Does anyone know what kind of angles these can run at. I am just looking at 8" to 10" of travel. Just wondering if they would work?

That outer joint is a fixed joint, cant plunge in and out.  If your building with A-arms or 4/5 link you should be ok.  Not for use with a trailing arm setup.  Travel wise, it should be able to do that pretty easy.  BTW you could probably find one at the local parts store.  $$$ may close or far, but you could touch it,

Yes I am building with a arms. I would love to have one in my hands but unfortunatly where I live parts stores are very limited. I will head out to the local auto wrecker and see if I can find one.

You can replace inner joint with type 4 if you don't have enough angle. The splines are the same[33]. Tim

OK, I just received the new axles for a 1998 vw jetta today. They are the ones in the link below. They come with cv grease in a tube. The inner cv's on both axles are very stiff and binds. There is no grease on them yet. Is this normal with a new dry cv? Will this clear up when the grease is installed? Should I pull them apart and buff them up or not? Grease them up lightly for now to see if they loosen up?

Put some grease in those cv joints and if they don't feel free after that, then there's a problem.

I have bearing carriers machined that hold a Set35 bearing. That bearing fits some of the models that also use those axles. $80 for a pair of them. You weld them into a custom upright, trailing arm, etc.

According to the measurements of the inboard cv's on these axles compared to the measurements on the blindchicken racing site. They are a type 4 cv, which is good for 22 degrees. This part gets welded into your upright, trailing arm, etc. With the snap ring groove to the outside. You put a Set35 bearing in it and a snap ring to hold it in. You can then press in a VW hub into that and the CV goes into the hub from the inside. The radius on the inside of the carrier is to clear the CV.

Hey livewire, I would like to order a set of these but I have a few questions.
I know the vw axles for this come with either a 90 or 100 mm bearing and of course I would want the 100. Also, I have a cheaper bearing for the axles mentioned here but I would rather buy a Timken bearing and from what you were saying a set 35 Timken.
So here's my problem, I want to order a set of carriers from you, a set of axles with 100 mm bearings ( pucks ) from rockauto. com and a set of Timken bearings to bring it all together.    Can you help me with exactly what I need to make this all possible ?      Thanks , snoopy

RockAuto does not list a Timken Set35. They do list National B35 which I used as a cross reference to other models. So I looked up other models that take that bearing until I found one that lists one with 100mm inner CVs.

This has both 90 and 100mm inners listed as well as the B35 bearing.
