I have several cheaper ones. Ones that go to 1600*F+ are not cheap.

Austenitizing temperature of stress proof is 1525, tool steels are approaching 2000f. The run of the mill laser thermometer isn't going to cut it. Most rarely go above 1000f.

Yeah, I have one that cost like $40.00 but it only goes to 900* Hopefully I can get a torch to borrow for the weekend!

For prototype ,you can temper it by eye.

Medium straw(or dark straw,i forget now?) color,quench in water.

I hardened some tool steel with the torch and quench and got pretty decent results. However, my application of press fixtures does not have shock load. I did not temper after. I have also had parts hardened professionally. The ones I had done professionally cost me less than what I paid to get the tanks refilled for the torches. It was definitely one of those cases where it cost less than I assumed it would. The people with the right tools can do it far more efficiently.
