You don't have to scratch if you have high freq.  Who's fxxking with the details now?

Nutz, virtually all metals can/will contaminate the tungsten.  The amount of contamination is what really makes the difference.  Some tungsten (and situations) will tolerate more contamination than others.  Scratch start has been around for many years and is still used today.

Here is my 2 cents. First turn the argon down (8-12), with it up that high you are actually loosing your clean area. Too much pressure is like not enough, you just blow all the gas away instead of it hanging there. Second, I form the ball by starting an arch on brass ( do not touch the brass) and let the ball form out of the tungsten. And you can tig without a foot pedal, BUT, when you get almost done and the work is heated and blow a hole in it because of no heat control, you will say " I NEED A FOOT PEDAL" so you need a foot pedal!!! A/C current for aluminum.

I've welded many many tons of aluminum with a thumb button it works great.
There is always free cheese in a mouse trap.

Pat,I've never used a thumb control. How is it if you have to be in a crappy position that makes for a funky grip on the torch?
