Plasma Torch
« on: August 17, 2009, 08:43:29 PM »
It's time to buy one. I will mostly need it for 3/8" or thinner steel. Any recommendations?

How does plasma do on aluminum?

Take a look at the Thermal dynamics cutmaster 52, or for more power the 82.  After I got my 81, the new model came out and we got one at work.  Very powerful, very light and compact compared to the previous model.  If I was to buy one now, after working on my own for awhile, I think the cutmaster 52 would do the job.

And, whatever thickness you think you need it for.....buy one that will do twice that.

Hell, after looking at this now I want one.  Comparing the specs.  My 81 (next size up in the previous generation)  Puts out 60 amps and will sever 1 1/4" steel.  The new 52 will put out 60 amps and sever 1 1/8".

Ahh shit.  I see the 82 is about $300 less than my 81 cost 3-4 years ago.

Maybe it's time for a trade in.  Or sale....

HE HE HE, one more.

Plasma does great on alum if you've got enough power.  Looks kinda like a rough band saw cut on thicker (1/4" and up) alum.  can be cleaned up pretty quick with a bur or a flapwheel.

Yup, the smaller ones tend to eat up tips and nozzles faster. What you save in the purchase price you will eventually eat up in consumables. Plus, the tips always seem to blow out a the worst time...... Sunday with no spare on hand......

Actually I got a good plasma cutter off ebay and it was pretty cheap. I cut Alli and up to 18mm mild steel and about 12mm alli, and it's been reliable!

OK ,I finally bought a plasma torch. I got a Hypertherm 45. I know there are pros and cons to all machines but this thing is SWEET! I could kick myself for not buying one sooner.
