Title: Micro Climate Anyone??
Post by: fabr on October 09, 2014, 07:50:29 PM
For those that have read my new car will be air conditioned and heated yet wonder how the hell that can be without full enclosed cockpit welllllllll here it is. Courtesy of the US military. Thank you Uncle Sam!  ;D ;D ;D ;D  After you stop laughing, think about being cool or warm as the weather dictates.

There are 4 plug in ports in the AC/heat under dash unit. The ports are military surplus as is the hose and arimid fiber micro climate vest that is designed to be worn under an outer garment depending on season in my application. ;) :) Two of the ports are ,one each, for the driver and passenger micro climate vest. The ports have a spring loaded damper door  also.  8) 8)  The other 2 ,center ports, are for the driver/passenger helmet air hoses. Again, 8) 8) ;D ;D

When  I first got the micro climate vests ,my first thought was NO WAY IN HELL will those things work. Wellllllll, I finally, reluctantly, put one on ,sat in the car and was amazed at how I hardly noticed the thing on. Then I plugged in a hair dryer to simulate the AC/heat and was again amazed at how the circulating air was awesome to say the least.

The Us Army paid $300 for the vests 20 years ago .I bought 4 of them for $40 total  ,shipping included.  rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

Oh ,the 2 big holes in the assembly are for the 2 traditional dash outlets for just cruising without the helmets on. ;D ;D    Of course, when done, all will be concealled behind a apron across the entire underdash and a "driveshaft" tunnel for wiring/cables,etc..

I made the white hose nipples as the sockets were originally on the hose end and no nipple ,of course, was supplied. I reversed the military "plumbing,so I can have the spring loaded damper in the dash to control where air flows to and not be just dumping into the non enclosed cockpit wasting valuable heat or AC.

The underdash assembly was made from ABS plastic ,solvent welded together just a model car when we were kids just dreaming of building cool shit!

Those nipples and sockets are very secure and will not,I think not anyway, come unplugged like common hose cuffs and nipples seem to do . They do come apart easily with a light tug when need to though.

Ditto. Make the solvent weld material by dissolving ABS chips/shavings,saw cuttings, etc.,in acetone. Make to a thick ,yet slowly pourable, consistency about like honey. I just put the ABS in a polyethylene condiment dispenser like ketchup and stuff is served in,use about 50/50 ABS and acetone. If too thin just add more ABS or let some acetone evap. Easy peasy. Offset pieces where edges meet and use the syrup as filler and solvent weld media all in one. The beauty of this method is that all joints are welded and reinforced in one step. The con is just like building those model cars as a kid. You must let one stage set up overnight before going on to the next stage of construction or the assembly can/will sag out of position. thumb down
