Title: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: sandracer1 on January 05, 2014, 04:13:57 PM
OK all. I am posting the dates we (the Revolt Gang) are going to L/S in 2014.
May 5-12
Sept 12-21

Now every year for the last 3 years you guys have been jealous of the weather we have verse what you guys end up with so here is your chance to take advantage of my mystical ways of knowing when the good weather is.
There will be about 12-20 of us. With a mix of Revolts, RZRs, Riots, sand cars and quads.

Hope to see you all there.

well I was just informed by enemy last night that there is a big group of us going may 26th thru the 30 this year and his brother is possibly coming with his jeep along with several others that haven't made it down in a couple years but these seem to be the only dates that will work for them. the week after memorial weekend will most likely be tore up on the sand but should be vacant I would think. any chance you can shift dates??????????????
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: sandracer1 on January 05, 2014, 04:58:46 PM
Cant really shift dates with the number of people already working with those dates. Not to mention I have already worked out the weather for us. LOL
Last year the week after memorial day the wind cleared all traces of that weekend in a day and a half. We were riding on smooth unmarked sand all week.
Plus that is Sandfest weekend. It was pretty disappointing last year. I like it to myself anyway. Too many people too much danger.

the week after memorial weekend is sand fest?
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: sandracer1 on January 05, 2014, 05:14:04 PM
yes. That is what I am told. They say Memorial Day was way more crowded. Sandfest seems to be a joke anymore. I think it was made by a few groups and that is who shows up. Not bad though. Good crowd to watch without getting killed.

The Jackson camp was full and the King Kong camp was full. It was fun to watch those crazy bastards run around in those badass cars. They are super cool and we have alot of fun with them.

lol all these years and I have never heard of king kong camp ground lol    well it goes to show how much I pay attention.   I have never and will never go down for sand fest or rattle snake round up! too many people in one spot for me. I know holiday weekends are busy but I figured if we got there on mon afternoon many would be gone and the place would be like a ghost town lol

I'll try to make both times.
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: sandracer1 on January 05, 2014, 06:42:24 PM
Not King Kong Campground LOL. The car King Kong. They are across the street from Dueces. The compound with the Train caboose by the tracks. And Sandfest was not that crowded. But yes a little tricky. we spent less time riding but really not too bad. They said Memorial day weekend was a freakin mess. We will be there for the weekend of Sandfest but have 5 days of empty dunes after that. It helps us pace ourselves in the beginning.

well looks like sandfest is Wednesday, 04/23/2014-Saturday, 04/26/2014 and I looked at the states site ( as accurate as it is) and all the state camp sites are booked already for april 25th and 26th. now that you have to reserve all state camp sites!
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: dsrace on January 05, 2014, 07:17:29 PM
yep even the private sites are almost full for the april dates.....wasn't trying to get you to change the dates just had to say it though.
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: Carlriddle on January 06, 2014, 05:39:19 AM
DS I didnt think you had to reserve, only that you could?  But that was Ranger info, maybe not the most up to date.

I thought the weather was pretty good.  Even the hail, was free ice for beer and ice cream.  Taking the girls to Miss for some sand riding as soon as warm enough, and I should make it whenever the date is.

carl the ranger said you can either reserve the site or take a chance that someone hasn't and show up.

sand racer this is the site   http://lspsonline.com/cgi-bin/in-cal.cgi
and this is the site to reserve the sites and if you scroll over you'll see the dates in april all grey which mean all the state sites are already reserved for those days according to there site.

We got a crew heading down May 28th -June 1st. So far around 15 of us I think. I was open for any date that was thrown out for a Spring trip and this seems to work for everyone wanting to go up here. Originally they wanted the week before but I said "hell no, have fun!". Like DS, I wont ever do a holiday weekend down there again. What a cluster eff!
Was hoping to finally hook up with you guys Sandracer! Hopefully next trip!

That and any event weekend either no matter where the place is. I'm all for wide open spaces and I don't mean between the ears of the crowd on a big weekend. LOL!!!

Like I said in a previous post. It was really not crowded for sandfest. We are there a whole week so a couple of days to watch some other fools tear their stuff up is good times. You guys like to tear your stuff up if I remember correctly. rofl  rofl rofl We will be there the following weekend as well. Our trips are always a week. Sorry you guys cant make it. If it changes you know where we will be.

sand racer you want to go to st A idaho?

The group I run with has talked about a trip there. It will not be this year but 2015 would be an option. Glamis is too far for me for sure. I have also thought about pink coral. You guys ever been there?
I like L/S because I can make a couple runs around it and feel pretty safe that I won't find any surprises. But I sure would like to see some real sand dunes in the future.
What time of year do you guys generally go to St A?
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: sandracer1 on January 13, 2014, 07:49:03 PM
Another issue is I do not own an RV so the wide open country of dunes puts me in a tent or I have to rent an RV. That aint cheap from here to Idaho. I just have to budget for it. Unless there are rental options at the dunes there. What are the options for lodging at StA?
Title: Re: 2014 L/S trips
Post by: fabr on January 13, 2014, 09:30:16 PM
It's about 13 miles to the nearest town. Not a bad drive at all. Good road. Had to do it about 10 times for parts last trip. LOL!!!! You could leave your toys in camp with us.

Post by: Carlriddle on January 14, 2014, 06:10:32 AM
Fabr, at St A did you stay at campground by that big lake?  It appears to have hookup, potties, and showers.  Or at least a big bathtub(lake).  For me St A is 30 miles closer than Glamis.

Post by: sandvw on January 14, 2014, 06:35:08 AM
The last time we went to Idaho we stayed at the motel as it was $60 something a night and Don and I split the cost and had breakfast in the morning, hot shower and good bed. It was also hot and we had air at night too. Unloaded at the lake area and that puts you at the start of the big dunes.

No ,Carl, that's where sandvw  is talking about. I stay @ Idaho Dunes RV Park. A mile or 2 away. The one you are talking about is a no reservation place. I gotta have a spot, for sure,to stay at.Honestly,Carl,I think our group would really like St.A..

Fast has been to coral pink ,says it is the most colorful of all ,I think. Also says it's a 1 day dune . Same with killpecker. I've always thought killpecker, would be fun but definitely not solo. The 20 miles or so of shit road is a negative as well. Still would like to try it.   Coral pink is also on my radar  and the "other " Little Sahara,Utah is too someday.

I hear you on the spot thing.  I need more than maybe before that kinda drive.
If its got sand, campfire lies, ice cream and beer count me in on the fun.  I've just got to get trailer done or go back to a toyhauler.  Still weighing it out.

Ok I am sold. I will work on some in my group to make a trip in 2015 to St A. My brother and me may try and rent an RV he has an inside track through friends on cheap rentals. If not I will take you up on leaving them at your camp since my trailer is open. No keys of coarse. ;D 8) unless you want to work out a time share on your rail.

well i'm sure killpecker isn't that nice but nor was syracuse sand dunes as informed before hand but worth the trip once to me. i plan on stopping at killpecker if possible on the way back and figure on next trip out i will see utah and st a on that trip then i want a trip to oregon dunes!!   ;) ;) ;D ;D

sand racer if you want to leave your toys at camp that's fine.....bring a cable and lock and you can other wise i will be testing it for you lol lol   hell motel fee's sound to be as much as camping site fees?

Post by: fabr on January 14, 2014, 05:18:53 PM
I think I'd like killpecker as it is supposed to be more rolling dunes that can be run pretty fast. Big ,tall dunes are not there from what I have been told but that's perfectly fine with me. I like running whoops and rollers much more. I believe it's pretty low on visitors so there's little chance of a head on accident.

You can try and take it out but it is like Kit from Knight Rider, he better recognize your voice when you are heading for that big dune or he goes into self destruct mode. That is if you can find my kill switch. That will keep you busy for awhile itself.

FYI
Coral pink is pretty and smells nice but more riding in Oklahoma than Coral pink. Where I rode at in the Utah dunes was very small too.
At St/a there is a day unloading area that does not cost anything to ride but the camp ground the last I knew was first come first serve but cost you to camp.

Got a vid from Blue Moon John from their trip to Killpecker Dunes. I'm with Fabr on this one, looks like a cool place to run them wide open! That's what John said he didn't like about it ( and the shitty road ).. I definitely want to try and hit it for a day, if anything just to stick my toes in the sand...

well that day or atleast while they were there lol   he said it was sooo steep or I should say there were 2 or 3 sooo steep they had to pop the front wheels up on the bikes to get on them and the 250 2 strokes were a struggle to get up to the top.  don't know first hand though as I have never been there myself. I would stop on the way back from st A to check it out.

now on a bike I wouldn't want to stall half way up lol

Was doing a lot of info finding about KP. Seems that there is basically zero enforcement there. Approx 10,000 acres. HOWEVER,I have read that there is a lot more territory that is "out of bounds",somewhere around 100,000 acres that people "accidentally" tread upon. Have not seen what the penalty is for being caught out of bounds. There is an area called Steamboat mountain that the BLM closes for a rare elk or antelope (some kind of 4 legged thing) for 3 months ending in late June,IIRC that is. I'm betting it's like thunder mountain in Nevada(?) that rumbles if you pump the brakes as you slowly go down the dune face.  Even mid summer daytime temps are only in the 80's with colder nights since it's at higher altitude.

what I understood is ( and haven't looked to deep into it myself and it looks like fabbr now knows more than I ) is that only the 10k acres are for duning and the others are a national wildlife preserve but with a pipeline or two going through. the wind doesn't stop and I guess that's why they called kp the fastest moving dunes in the US. it still looks like a good place to check out and there are only primitive out houses to use if you fight the critters off for a seat lol lol or so I have been told by a few. when Jeremy and his bunch last went they camped in the parking lot and said it snowed over night in mid june!! he said it was weird cause they would be running the face or top of a dune and would just sink well the sand blew over the snow overnight and early that morning they would drop into a pocket or two. I think he said his gps showed they were over 5800 ft above sea level but don't remember that part to clear anymore.  he did say that there were out of bounds markers here and there but a ways apart so I don't know how they figure that one.  hope we can stop and with no problems. good info fabbr didn't know about the elk/antelope part  and I thought there was about 30k acres but looked to be more on the map just never looked farther.

I gather the nearby locals ignore the markers excdept in the area of Steamboat Mtn area as that's what the BLM is obligated to protect.

One video I was watching said the area was 3 miles wide and 75 miles long. But riding area was just a small part. Looking at satellite views it pretty dang big.

St A looking at sat appears to have 3-4 sand area with large brush between. Not sure about riding in all of them either.

St.A is just one big area that is ridden on so far as I have seen.

Looks like Wed May 28 - Sun June 1st.   I'd prob show on Tue.  You'll firm the dates, DS & Enemy.

Monday, 26th, is Memorial Day and when they seem to arrive.

And surprising, accord to state campsite reservation, every campsite at Cowboy is avail for week.

carl the ranger said you can either reserve the site or take a chance that someone hasn't and show up.

sand racer this is the site   http://lspsonline.com/cgi-bin/in-cal.cgi
and this is the site to reserve the sites and if you scroll over you'll see the dates in april all grey which mean all the state sites are already reserved for those days according to there site.

Now I get shit together, new higher cfm fan, real oil cooler sneak ac on trailer cause it be hot as mofo end of may. No pants req this trip.

If you don't have the AC yet let me know. I have one off the toter that only needs the blower fan mounted back to the base pan. I bought a new one before I found that. Thoiught blower motor had seized.  Nope, was just against housing and woiuldn't turn.  The sheetmetal screws just worked loose and would be fixed by using a bolt/nylok easily. Take maybe 10 minutes. Prep your roof with a standard 14x14 hole, prewire and we can have it running in way under an hour if you are interested. The price would be right......................

well i didn't get my entire to do list done this winter but i did get the body wrap done and clear coated ( a thanks to enemy for clearing it ) i got the shocks re-valved and the exhaust re-designed and built and some sensors moved along with tank modified and vented  and fixed the fuel sender ( i hope) along with spill  proof fuel cap! also the tank vent has a tip over valve to keep the fuel from coming out. got he brakes adjusted and oil changed and throttle bodies re-synced, so now i just have to re-set the auto tune. got the power vent with power lid wired and installed in the toy hauler as well as a ceiling fan installed, but no time for axle flip and larger wheel before the trip. i got the air bag kit installed on my truck so my low beams are no longer my high beams while loaded with the toyhauler lol. i also got the sewer line fixed after the last trip where it got banged up a bit from road kill lol broke the end of it clean off lol i also added two more led 4" lights that shine off to the side for the side hills and trails at night.

"Stop Time" button, I was a little slow on, but then blew coffee out my nose.  Oh I also pu a second frozen treat maker, and a new fridge for trailer.  You guys will love it.   LMAO LMAO

rofl ..You referring to the typhoon I went through with the car on the open trailer? It definitely got all the crud out of all the nooks and crannys!  rofl
Did a bunch of work to the pulling rig and needs a retune, but going to pull this trip without most likely because of other things that require funding. Pull the car out of the trailer this week and revalve the rear shocks and other little stuff, also replace and relocate the inverter in the shack so when the fridge thaws out it doesnt fill the remote board on the inverter full of water. I found out electronics don't like that for very long lol! I have all sorts of luck with H2O!

A second frozen treat maker Carl!? You guys are going to spoil us all rotten!!

Got the important stuff strapped down, now just playing the waiting game till morning!
I was just informed we may be having monkey bread and peach cobbler cooked in a Dutch Oven over a campfire sometime this week! Compliments of a 11 year old boy scout named Daven! He's getting pretty good with food and fires ;D
I mentioned to him that peach cobbler goes great over homemade vanilla ice cream and that there might POSSIBLY be some of the best on the planet down there.. He immediately started packing the fixins lol
Safe journey yall!

Hope this helps satisfy your itch.
We had a blast as usual. Sand was perfect. Crazy shapes and a little sketchy to figure them out on day 1 but we worked it out as you can see. I was the only one that broke. Last day broke a 5/8 grade 8 and the steering box doing 50mph. No harm no foul. Loaded up and it is fixed. Went riding last weekend here locally.

Lets see if you guys can make it sept 12-21

Well all went well up until the end.  Was packing up Saturday night after finding my waste-gate had almost fallen off.  No big deal, I'll toss in a couple of thread inserts and it'll be good as new. Felt like I was not boosting while pulling John out from the fluffy quad trails and around a bowl or two.   Wondered why my boost was acting up. But that's not all. Almost had the trailer all packed up and the Wife tripped and broke her ankle.  We canceled are trip to Fort Worth TX and came on home Sunday morning.  But while the wife sat in the trailer with her foot up I was out setting on the trailer steps enjoying the night air.  All at once here came every park ranger and sheriff in wood's county and rousted the three young guys that had set up camp just to the south of us a crossed the road.   Don't know what it was all about but they found something in there truck and went through every item they had. They let them load all there bikes and break down camp before putting them in cuffs.  Sure would like to know what there probable cause was? boy's were not being loud or having a party.  Just out biking like everyone else.

Thanks Ds. The one pulling the wheels was a first timer in our group. He just installed a 1050cc 3 cylinder Nytro sled motor. About 140-150 hp. It turns about 9200 revs. It hooks hard ass hell. It is 7" shorter than my xl and 150lbs lighter. He let me launch it for a few runs. It is a monster. I weigh a little more than him and I could lean forward in the seat and carry the front wheels about 50-75'. It is a cool feeling. The dunes were freaky for sure. The first day was definitely a scouting out day. We all ride pretty smart. But get dumber as the week goes on. The sand was SWEET!!!!!! I have never seen it so smooth and soft. I keep telling you guys I know how to pick the weeks. SEPT 12-21!!!! Maybe you will trust me this time. nono Those trails always test the suspension for sure.

Sandfest is Sept 12-14 but I will say it was dead dead dead last year. Labor day is the crazy weekend. I bet I only counted 40 vehicles last year during sandfest. It was good at night just enough people to have some fun trains to run the trails with. Jackson camp was full and some regulars filled the Dueces campground. It was a good time. And then we had all week to ourselves. The following weekend is a big Banshee drag race gathering but they all stay at the drag strip behind the big drag strip at the south camp entrance. They all stay at south camp.

We do ride off weekends. The whole May trip was an off week. Sandfest is not that crazy. We ride smart and are always watching the ones who don't. We don't generally drink or party too much and if we do we are not dunning for sure. You guys need some rzrs and revolts to slow you down anyway, maybe you all could go a few days without breaking. rofl or hitting a tree rofl or following each other over a dune rofl.
I am just saying, maybe you should try sandfest. We are there for 9 days so we will have 5 days of dead time during the week.
If I wanted crazy I would do snakehunt and Labor Day!!!!

memorial weekend must have been packed as well judging from all the tracks lol    the reason we go on off weeks is so we don't have to slow down  rofl rofl
