The UltraGray silicone made byPermatex or Loctite will never be affected by gas or oil and it blends nicely in color to aluminum.

Pat, thanks for the answer. As a professional welder your opinion is greatly appreciated. Is the offset  lap joint a bad way to go?

Any box no matter what it is made of is inherently strong at the corners.
Any weld and the nearby area is soft. Put the welds at the corners where a box is it's strongest by nature. You can't put lap joints at the corners.

Hmmmm,I see your point and don't argue it but it also seems like every tank I've ever seen fail ,failed at the corner. So,is the lap joint a bad joint/bad idea ,period?

I think everybody is looking past the mounting too. Most cracked tanks i have seen are due to it being mounted to seperate sections of the frame that flex differently. Seen this problem with radiators too. I try to mount tanks and radiators to isolated sections of the frame that should flex at the same rate.

I agree with Punk.  Hard mounting any of those is not good.  Straps or the rubber isolation gromet with sleeve are best.  But Fabr knows this, so carry on..... ;D

Punkur's points are well taken. I guess Pat is not willing to expand on his corner weld only reasoning though. Must not be a true believer................. ;D ;D or not willing to explain his position. Oh well.

Sorry been preocupied with other stuff.
Lap joints cant go in the corners, The corners of a box either dont flex or flex very little depending on how far your trying to divide the gnats ass. If you take any panel in a box and draw an X on it from corner to corner the box flexes less at the corners and more as you come to the center of the X.
If you use lap joints they will be in an area that is prone to flex ,not good for welds.
Lap joints are good for soldering to increase the contact surface where the solder adheres.

Well Pat has nailed it, you should soldier the tank together with lap joints.  LMAO rofl LMAO

Never welded alum, but with thinner steel, welding a corner can be easy to burn a hole at a spot.  Then trying to fill a hole you overheat(leading to stress cracks later) or dont quit seal it leaving a pin hole.  I think the mounting to 1 solid tube would be best cause would only take a gnats ass  ;D of moving to find the weak spot.
