Title: Buggy build update
Post by: SandDragon on June 21, 2009, 08:55:20 AM
Still working on it got a little more done. Rear motor support and have the headers done going to get them ceramic coated soon. Still have to add upper shock supports and a few more little things, at least no more big stuff to buy except for the powder coating, thank goodness getting tired of spending money. I am still under $6000 though check out the complete build at www.photobucket.com/sand-dragon-design I would like to know what you guys think so far.

Wow 92" in the rear with 3x3s! that looks like a stock tortion housing too. How wide wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. Are you just running real wide wheels?

More pics coming soon im starting to put it all together now we got the upper shock support welded in last night. I trying to get it ready for a hard test drive before i take it back apart and have it powder coated i would hate to have to weld on it after it painted.

New pics, I finshed the dash and got the stainless pipe bent instead of running long radiator hose and have my lights mounted. I should have it finshed in a couple of weeks for the big test drive, if nothing breaks I take it apart and have it powder coated.

Dsrace and I both have v6 cars. Make sure you put in mounts to control the torque of the motor. I dam near left my 3.1 on the ground. It had broken off the trans mount, mid mount, and started to take on the rear mount. Is that 091 built up? DS and I both now have 100% weddle geared 091s. DS blew his stock 2nd up pretty quick. The 3800 puts out some real fun power. Hope your at the beer fest

yes it is an 091 but it isn't built I'm hoping that it will hold up as good as my other trans it was a stock car IRS trans it made it thru 4 trips to LS the only problem I had was pulling the hockey stick out and it wouldn't shift. I don't think I took it to easy on it but I haven't got to wild with the big jumps. Most didn't believe it was a stock car but you can also see pictures of it in my photo bucket under my old buggy. Take a look at my pictures to see if I have the motor mounted good enough. Let me know if you think I need to add another mount. You can see all the pictures of my build at www.photobucket.com/sand-dragon-design  I would love to see you all at the bear fest when is it? Will it be OK if I only drink Root Beer? here is a clip of me and my old buggy with the same V6 that I'm using in my new one.

If the pay per sites are all full you can believe that all the public camp sites are full to.  You mite try the Deuces Wild and the other one down the way called Associated camping. They have some spots across the road north.

Edit
Just called the Deuces Wild and they had a group cancel on them.  The owner is going to call me back and let me know if they have any of them still open.

The place will be crowded to overcapacity. If you really want to have fun riding the buggy you will be disappointed. If you like looking at a lot of stuff you will have a ball. Don't be too optimistic about finding a site tho. If you do find one grab it. IMMEDIATLY!

I know no pictures please. Hey I'm setting up the front end of my buggy everything I read says that it should be toed in about 1/4" at the front my question is do I set it at ride height ( /\ ) or do I set it with the a-arms level ( - - )?
Title: Re: Buggy build update
Post by: fabr on September 08, 2009, 09:17:38 PM
Ride height. ALL alignment dimensions always are to be set at ride height.

OK guys I need some more help how do you tighten the rear axle nut and hold the hub at the same time? How tight should it be and how do you check it? another question when you have the axles in and you move the trailing arm up and down there is a point when the axle is at its shortest point how much play should there be in the axle back and forth? I'm also guessing that that little bag of grease is enough for one CV it doesn't look like much to me.

Thanks

Big steel bar about five feet long with two holes drilled in it to go over two of the lug nut studs.  275 foot lb's.  big cheater bar on the ratchet handle. About .5 to .65

Thanks for the help the only problem is the .5 to .65 in axle play I believe it is more like .25 to .375 I can put another washer behind the trailing arm bushing to get a little more room but it doesn't give much more than a 1/4" of thread depth in my pivot bolt but I will be using safety wire to keep it from backing out. thanks again trying to do this right the first time.

Turn some off the end of the axles and move the keeper ring grove back some.  .250 to .375 us a tad close.  You mite be able to just turn some off each axle end with out messing with the groves to get the .500 you need.

I'm glad I've got a 750 foot lbs torque wrench in the shop  ;D  No need for the cheater bar when torquing!!
