unless you want to powder coat someday then you'll play hell getting it all out even with sand blasting it.  I have seen this first hand, not on one of my rails but a close friend. and what's wrong with knocking the edge off a weld and/or laying a small pass back over it?

Ya, powder is great but this one will be paint.  After going thru the work to paint it I am to lazy to strip it and powder it.  Just sell it and start over.  I already of a list of things I would change but that always happens.

When you do the calculation for the weld strength you assume that the weld is a triangle because that is where all of the strength is.  So there isn't a big concern in knocking the tops of the weld down.  My problem is once I have a grinder in hand it is hard to stop.  You know that looks good but maybe a little more would be better,...Uuuuuhhhh.

Good welds look good painted.  I wire wheel only.  If it needs grinding down, I cut it down and lay another pass over.  There was company importing some cars with bondo welds to cover the crap.  Cracked and fell out.

I painted mine.  Self etching primer after complete wipe down with xylene.  3 coat of hammertone paint shot with a gun.  Touch up with rattlecan.  They sell it both ways.
You can keep your CHANGE, I'd like to keep my DOLLAR.

Grinding welds is bad practice. Carl is right.

Putting mine together bare for now.  Never built one from scratch before and figure ill probably need to make a change or 2.  Been wiping down with a clp for now to slow down rust.  Tear down later and powder coat
