Fixed 930 CV Lube Failure

First failure of a fixed 930 Joint. Admittedly my fault no doubt. Lack of maintenance. 4 years and never looked at.My bad. I was running short on time needing to do repairs to the drivers side before our LS Spring trip so I only had time to service that side. It was pristine/plenty of lube and would have ran a very long time without re-greasing as it was.I thought ,cool,I should be good to go and get the other side when I got back. Uhhhhh,WRONG. I was amazed that the balls and tracks were basically perfect. The star OD and the cage ID/OD were however TRASHED. Apparently,those areas are a place of high friction and the balls/tracks are not. If I am thinking right that is opposite of what happens with a plunging cv when suffring lack of lube and also with plenty of lube on higher HP cars.

No,this dumass didn't lube enough. Somehow that side never had much in it to start with. Must have been a massive brain fart. I'm amazed it went 4 years.I posted this to show how little heat the non plunging cv's generate. The balls and tracks are almost perfect,no pitting,galling just a bit of blackening from the dried out moly grease. The pics look much worse than they are. The cage and star though where they rub against each other though were trashed. Seriously trashed. Again,pics don't show the whole story.

Well RCV does have a no ?? ?? warrenty, but sounds like your taking the wrap for this.  You could prove the GD folks right, be a D!%K and complain til the swapped.  I'd go for the honest approach, and bet they will work it out for you.  ;)




ps Better get then ordered ASAP, they can be slow.  Although I hear its much better time wise now.

I'm not the dickheads of GD. LMAO  This is my fault,no one elses. All there is to it. I won't stop to trying to get RCV to replace it. I bought a full set of extras when I bought the originals since they were prototypes at the time. No delay,going together tonight.They were IIRC around $300 each at that time.

Smart move on the spares.  Glad it was only a cv, the easiest repair for that noise.

On the cv savers, you see the plastic/rubber things go on boot side to keep grease up in cv and cup? 

I'm gonna pull mine apart and service before next trip.  I've only worked on them in the sand of LS.  nono kick nono

I see zero need of the CV saverz with non plunge cv's .plunging lines are a different story.

I don't think the CV savers have enough angular movement for non-plunging CV's.
