Blue Buggy Due for Complete Tear Down
« on: July 24, 2018, 09:01:44 PM »
Well the busa tranny has gotten a bit of an attitude. 1st and 2nd are jumping out. The blue buggy has now had 5 seasons on it and some pretty hard use. Only had a broken tranny input shaft and totalled it pretty much one time but it has never had a tear down and inspection of the 091 and the adapter. Never a problem with the 091 adapter. Not bad for a prototype, huh? I'm pretty interested in what I'll find after all this time. Anyway,I'm about to get big buggy back together and I have some yxz's to play with so it is time. Soon as big buggy is out of shop, blue will move in for the rest of the season /winter.

While I have the busa out I'm going to go ahead and put rods and pistons in. Still thinking keeping most of stock compression to keep most of off boost performance and turning up the boost a few PSI. Oh well,Thought I'd start a topic that should move forward in the next couple weeks.

that is pretty good life out of your 091. I remember when we all was at saint Anthony's, 2 or was it 3 years ago? your blue car was puffing some smoke. it did not seem to slow it down at all. That car is impressive in more then one way.  I have my 091 tore down. found that the reverse gear on the gear stack and the small one on the reverse selector bad.  I pulled a junk one from pile next to my shop. it was a 002 but it sure looks like the reverse gears will work. next step get a press. for years. I have always old schooled it. I Got by using the bench vise. I thank I will make one using the ram from my tubing bender. I have a small shop need all the space saving I can get.  post some pics. for this first timer. lol

There's nothing wrong SFAIK with the 091. It's the busa 1-2 that are needing attention. Ya,blue buggy still smokes under hard acceleration. I think it is from the turbo. There has always been some oil in the intake tract from the turbo, through the intercooler and into the airbox. I don't really believe the busa is the source but time will tell.

The pig has definitely taken to abuse! Awesome car.
Did you ever have the trans cut?
I would do over and under, 1-6. Love how they shift.
Mark is still the goto guy on these transmissions, hope he is still going?

No,I have not under cut the dogs/slots. I will this time. Gen 2 trannies are factory undercut. Gen 1 are not. I agree with up and down cut but I'm not too sure that 3-6 need it. What's your opinion? Thanks for the link!!  FWIW,I have not ever had any shifting issues other than absolute abuse of the trans. I'm constantly shifting through 3-6 on the dunes. I hurt 2nd gear a long time ago with the shitty electric shifter. Got rid of the electric shifter and replaced trans with another stock trans.  Sooooo,it's been about 4 years or so running with the stock non under cut trans.

Speaking of under cut dogs/slots. I need to get a couple pics of how much under cut my Fortin has. A lot more than the busa trannies get!

I did all the gears especially because I am always in 3-6. I figured those are the ones that will get the most use/abuse. Downshift is as smooth and simple as the upshift.. Light blip or unload of the trans and it is in the previous or next gear.. Sucks itself in, so to speak lol
I also did the HD output shaft while at it.. How would that work with your adapter? Or can it work??

I've had no issues at all with 3-6. I'm going to wait till I tear it down and inspect before making the call. It's always shifted like greased lightning.Never a glitch but I do a LOT of no clutch shifting.

it will be interesting to see the condition of the gears for sure and i bet they are worn. the stock busa trans isn't truly up to the task but the fact they lasted this long and on a stock clutch basket really is impressive. building the inside for a bit more power will make a noticable diff.

big dave def post pics up of your trans too.

Probably just put in a new set of gears. It's quite easy to do.I have a set on the shelf I can send out now to have undercut.
