Nope didnt need to... I thought it was to short for free length, but with some off the adjustment it was perfect....

so you cut some threads off the adjuster?  I have shortened the housing before to gain a little exposure on the cable.

No i didn't mod the cable at all, I didn't have everything together, and measuring I thought I was short, turned out I was not... I couldn't do anything with the housing etc, without wacking off the ends... the barrel adapter solves the problem, and saves me buying a cable...

well even though bug got his solved, ill add my story.  when i needed to fix my cable and had no money. i took it to my machine guy. he cut the frayed cable end off, cut a new barrel from a stainless steel rod. drilled the hole, stuck it on the cable. silver soldered it on with the acetalene torch. it broke within 5 minutes right where the cable went into the barrel. he said he must of heated the cable to much. so we repeated and was carefull not to get the cable to hot. has lasted for almost 6 years and still going..

Uh that's what I said to do. But  yes you cannot get the cable anywhere near the torch or it will fail very quickly as you found out..Of course you also found out if done right it will last very well.
