I've seen them racing sleds circle track style. They can go for a very long way. Just don't lose too much momentum.

There is a Biker ralley held in Southeren Ohio that features a Sled race across the lake. The one who makes it across gets a $1000.00. Only seen one guy do it.  The funnyest one I seen was a junk sled that a guy attached pink Insualtion board to the sides horizontally and when it hit the water the foam just blew apart and he sank right off the bank.

If you go to youtube and type in the search variations of sled or snowmobile and water you will see tons of videos.

They can keep a sled on top of water as long as the motor stays running. Like Spec says over about 30mph they will stay up.

With a paddle track for powder or custom angle iron added to the track any sled can cross great distances of water if its got any power/speed at all.

I have seen roundy round sled racers on water go for over five minutes while slowing a tad to turn corners around markers then accelerating away to the next part.. Setup right a sled can gain speed on water easy. Now rough water I dunno.

But on smooth/smoothish water no sweat. Heck I have seen old single cylinders running on top of water. Just gotta stay hydroplanning.

Your mission isn't to dive feet first into hell, but to make sure its crowded when you get there.

Back in my sledding haydays :-[
The best water skip sled I had was an 80' Po. Cutlass-SS...Old skool sled ;D
Bout nothing for travel...Pretty potent 440 Converted to free air...Ported and one of my 1st attempts at rolling pipes... The track had strips of another old track bolted to it to act like parachutes do in the water... they were kinda like the buckets on a hops elevator...that's where I got the idea from...I wish I had some pix of that
With the shocks stripped off the front and the powder ski's bungy strapped up I only needed about a 30' start on dry land
That thing was a blast...but didn't turn real well.
The biggest problem I had was keeping the airbox and IGN dry...If it spuddered or missed.....you were going down... drowning And ya better get the motor shut down before it goes under...Busted crankshafts/bent rods/and broken pistons.... If you don't...HOWD I KNOW THAT?... Now if it was off when you went down...just get the pontoon boat out with 4 or 5 of yer laffing their ass off buddies...grab the bouy you were using as a seat...Drag it up off the bottom and head for shore...Once there pull the spark plugs and the plugs out of the block..
Pull it over a few times...Till it quit puking water like a drowning victim put a fresh set of plugs in it.... :-*
And it's time for another round

I was out in the shop dinking with the sno blower and remembered that the sled was stripped to the bare minimum...EI no brakes, no lights, no belt guard, rear flap etc....
I often thought of taking the ski's off completely and tooling around like a jetski ;D ....
But I hit a dock with it 1st :'(
Took out both my knees and totalled the sled
