Had such hopes to be farther along by now.  So, came home a day early labor day weekend, to checks welds and paint. This weekend I will begin reassembly.

My garage still smells like a middle eastern body shop from that spray paint! 

My goal for sun was to have had the motor and trans, control arms and axles all mounted and aligned. Also planned on mowing the yard but none happened. Wife's suv needed to be replaced due to gm's lack of build quality. I HATE car shopping.  Truck whopping sure but car and suv , not so much. 5 hrs at the dealership sat!!!!!!! I was shot by the time we got home. We bought here a used '22 Subaru ascent with the turbo 4 cyl. Rides nice and very comfortable.

So Sunday, thought maybe I could get close but needed/wanted to set cam timing with the degree wheel enemy loaned me. Thanks enemy. 3 hrs searching for it ! Couldn't remember where I put it. Got tired of looking so started stripping the turbo and manifold. Found out the tool to get my manifold bolts aff is lost. Had to drive into town to by 2 more of them which require a slight mod to work. Got all that apart and cleaned up. 2 of the 4 ports were leaking. #3 on both side of the gasket and #2 on just the manifold side. Its ready for resurfacing.

2 years ago on the last trip, blew the trans up. That evening before, upon returning from a very short night run with Brian n, I noticed the 3xh manifold glowing red like an led light was on after cruising low rpm, no boost from the gate to camp site. Took 7 mins at idle to get it cooled enough it wasn't glowing.. Advanced the cam 6* per enemies person al experience. Sadly the tranny locked up an hr later the next morning. Not a surprise and wish it would've held out co get me closer to the gate    reached out to bo port who makes the cam for specs. He does not and will not send cam spec cards with his cams. No idea why either but sure he has a reason. He told me to set intake lobe centerline to 112* for this cam.  Never done it before but had to learn quickly. That 6*  was 1* to far advanced and it took 8 or so tiny adjustments to get dead on 112*.   so at 112* lobe centerline, my intake valve, at .050" lift, is at 4* after tdc and closing , again at .050 lift, at 34* after bdc. Now that its at 0 i may advance 8t back that 1* just for a tiny bit more bottom end.  The difference in 1* advanced was the valve is 0* tdc at .050 lift rather then 4* after tdc.

Emailed bo port ( cam designer) he says spec'd for 112* centerline but 2* advanced should set it at 108* and thats acceptable with this cam.  He said its retarded too far for sure but not sure if that the whole problem with the header glowing at low load light throttle.. Going to try it it at 112* first. 

Generalg........ just bought it sat and only put maybe 100 miles on it including test drive. I like the cvt coupled to the 8 speed trans.  You do not notice the shift points. I wouldn't buy a Subaru without the turbo engine. They seem to have far too many issues popping head gaskets and burning valves. The turbo motors are built better. Searching forums and articles extensively online, only real complaints with the 2021 22 and 23 ascents are the need to update the infotainment system. Other then that, routine maintenence and new timing chain and head gaskets at 100k and they run to 200k no problem saw several comments across the board of people that have never changed the timing chain or head gaskets with 140 and 150k and still running strong. Our first suby and no real experience. I went after it because its the size of the 2014 gmc Acadia awd, she has been driving. Very comfortable for traveling but will never buy another one . The suby is equally as comfortable for innerstate travel. Suby holds the patents on the asymmetrical and. Only one running a true and and they have done a great job. I know the awd gmc saved our buts in many snow storms in the past......subys and is superior. 

They rate it at 27 mpg hwy. The gmc got 20 mpg at 80 to 85 mph when I drove and 23 to 24 when my wife drives.  If it gets that, keeps her on the road in the snow so she makes it home on her own.....worth it 

We bought this '21 used. New this one is $42k and I'm not paying that price. Normally look for 20k to 30k miles used so the bugs have been worked out and past break in. Cannot find any at 20 to 30k miles. This one has 40 k miles , light colored interior which was a must but darker blue exterior. Wanted white cause we live on gravel. Gave $28 out the door.  We will see how she likes it. What I can tell you for sure is that the right front and middle row seats recline to an almost flat position.

Rehearing isn't cheap but if it needs it then it needs it. That is something I understand all to well.. gears or r&p?

1-2 dogs are cracked as well as dog rings. R&P to 4.38 from the 3.88.  Reverse gear needs replaced also. Shift forks need attention/updating.All bearings and seals as is normally done on refresh.  I don't know how many$ but it will be many $$$$.  McMullen hopefully will have the numbers today or tomorrow. Box will be as close to new as possible when returned.
