Title: Camels Guide to wiring connectors
Post by: fabr on July 24, 2009, 11:04:33 AM
I've just landed $300 worth of Busa plugs.  Had to source from different suppliers all over the world.  An absolute pain in the arse.  Still haven't got the Gen I instrument cluster connector, and the six sets of MX23A plugs used on the Gen II Hayabusa ECU have been ordered, paid for and lost somewhere in transit!

If you start a sticky I'll post up what I've found to-date.  Suppliers are a different issue.  I've found that some have sold out, aren't getting more in, and the manufacturers want you to buy enough to refit every existing Hayabusa on the planet.

When I get some time I'm going to spend some time in a Jap car wrecking yard and identify which cars use the same connectors, then all we need to do is identify the pins used and source them.

Masterfabr,

are you seeking this plug?

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi156.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft20%2Fcamel_geselle%2Felectrical%2FHayabusaGenIClusterPlug.png&hash=83a2ad61b82e5fb3450c318d0cb6c689c02117e5)

Cause if you are, you might be in luck.  But unfortunately, not with me.  I still haven't been able to get a source.  Part of the problem is that I don't have access to one.  I've got photos of it but not of the whole thing. What we need is someone who currently has one to send in some close-up photos of the connector, zooming in as best they can on any identifying marks, symbols, abbreviations, etc.

That would be a great help.  I can't get at one until I get back from North Queensland next week.

Anyone willing to help out?

Thanks mate.  Even if there's a little symbol, like a star or sunrise, or even a 'JAE' on it we should be able to track down the manufacturer.

Does this actually plug into something or is it just in line?

Plugs directly into the instrument cluster.

Tyco carry it.  They carry an awful lot of AMP plugs.  Been going through the catalogue trying to match it up.  Haven't found it yet.

I looked for a long time a couple of years ago and didn't find it. I hope someone does tho because buying a complete harness is the only alternative isn't it if we don't find it available?

I've found the same plug but the slots underneath are arranged differently.  I imagine it could be modified to fit the busa dash.

I'll order one, but after my experiences with RS-Online I'm nervous about ordering from the big boys again.

How about a how-to on proper installation and removal of pins and what kinds there are?

What happened? they are a tad expensive (basically 2x anywhere else) but they usually have stock.
I've been dealing with them for 15 years... I do all my prototyping with their catalog in my lap ;) They have never not made good on mistakes, at least for me.
Farnell are a similar thing with similar prices and stock levels.

It's just not that simple I'm afraid. So may different types, basically.

eg the pins are held in place usually by a barb, either from the front, the back or the inside a moulded sleeve incorporated into the shell that holds it. others are screwed in, but I doubt many will see those types in their lives :( pins and sockets can have different fixings on the same plug.

heheheee bloody kids, take your shit, give me shit, what can ya do :P

2 screwdrivers are for when there's 2 barbs holding the pin in... which I forgot to mention. Typically when 2 barbs are used  you use a tube on a handle that slips over the pin and releases the barbs. that method works well for single barbs too, but only when the barb is accessible from the pin rather than the crimp end. finding the right sized tube leaves me with two jewelers flat heads in my hands and the plug in a vice ;)

I use jewelers flat blades to pry open the crimp around the wire. then pointy nose pliers to crimp it back. maybe a dab of solder if the crimp looks sus.

You could always ask on a Hayabusa forum if anyone has junk plugs or trashed wiring harness

Two sites I check our are http://hayabusa.org and http://suzukihayabusa.com/
