Title: FALL group run 10/22-10/28 2023.
Post by: fabr on April 30, 2023, 04:17:34 PM
The week before Halloween has been tossed out there for the fall run. Any other suggestions?

Maybe their web site isn't working right, but I show the sites all booked.  I checked 10/10 thru 10/14, then 10/17 thru 10/21, finally 10/23 thru 10/28, booked solid?  WTF?

You guys might have to bite the  bullet and stay at Dueces. If the new trail to the dunes is open the ride won't be so bad. And,and, and,,,,,,,,,they have full hook ups! 8)

I know all you guys trash talk the south campgrounds and think it is for the low life's, but Cowboy and Buttercup really aren't any different/better on the WEEKENDS. Just more activity south because it is bigger. I think whoever needs to decide on specific dates should just call the office there and they will be able to determine/setup enough open spots in Cowboy in your timeframe. I don't trust the website.

If you guys should decide to use any of the south camps it will make it basically extremely inconvenient for me to join in on any socializing with you guys. I'm not going to run the length of the dunes to visit each time and going on runs almost impossible to join in. In other words, I am not in favor of using the south end. My .02...

I don't mind the south camp, stayed there for 30 years, but with my current rig, I just don't fit anymore.  I can do Deuces for a couple nights.

Never thought it was for low lifes. Its party central or has been everything I've camped there. doesn't have the wind block the north side has. Cowboy is a nicer camp ground but has gained in popularity rapidly.

Dueces is usually very quiet. I've never had an issue with noise other than the trains .With an AC running never paid them any attention.

We have only stayed there the one time and aside from the train alarm clock at 5:30  am it was quiet and calm. The whooped out trail isn't fun but if thats how we get spots together with out reserving 1 year in advance then thats what we will have to do. I know carl and Yvette would be happy with renting that cabin again, so he could cross the USA on a flatbed rather then a camper. My children would also enjoy the cabin so I could haul both down on a flat bed GN. Called yesterday, new 30' low boy 102" wide GN are now $10k with a 10k lbs winch and tool box.  or I found 4 camper rentals with in a 30 min drive of waynoka for $80 per day.  $75 cleaning fee and $100 delivery and pick up fee if needed.

All in how you search the campsites, everything full around the weekends and if you include a Friday in the search. Search Monday- Thursday at Cowboy and they are all open.. (except for 637 and 640)  ;)
Thats why I have been going Sun night thru Thursday night, easy to get a spot.
People will be cancelling out by then, shit will open up. Just a pain in the ass to jump on it when they do cancel.

Working with Mike at Gear Vendors and sending the Jeff in next week. They still highly support this transmission and have made improvements like cryogenics on the gear-set, bearing improvements and better oiling to the top gear..somehow... ?
Curious on that one..
Anyhow, happy it is going to battle another day. It has been holding up great at 16psi, until I sent some undesirable shock-load into the side of the case with u-joints past their limit at very high speed..
Stupid geometry..

Cost can become a bother when I add it all up over the years, that is one seriously expensive little gearbox..
But that no longer matters.. Alan has been waiting 5 years for a ride in the rail. This is the way.  ;D

Never keep up on what a entire project cost, but when it come down to individual components like this I have to start weighing it out if an alternative is available cheaper than throwing another 3500 inside the teardrop shaped little effer..

Interesting the shape of a Jeffco as I cry in my wallet lol..

16 psi huh....... damn....i have never ridden in that rail running over 8 psi so i cannot imagine!

I stopped running low ,low 7 second 1/4 mile dragster because it was just getting too expensive to go any faster. Big dummy I was. It would have been many times less expensive to have just bought a new dragster and went ape shit crazy with nitro. Nothing cheap about this sport. I just priced a new set of 35.5-17 STU Sand Master paddles . $1250 each and approx another $800 shipping. $3300+ for 2 damn tires!!!!!!!  IF you can find them.   So,ya,3500ish seems to be the new number. :m

I have been watching Steve Morris engines on ScrewTube, been learning some good info.. He just broke down what it cost just to put his engines power to the pavement... Holly $$ Not a cheap hobby to go fast. And have lots of spare parts lol!

I'm no where near his level but the 427 SB2.2 that is almost ready to go(soon as Jesel gets off their ass and build my Rocker arms) will top 40K in parts.   Let that sink in for a minute. No labor ,just parts. For a NA engine.HP never was cheap and never will be. Ya,I could have built an LS cheaper but not by much with the same quality of parts.

was just checking dueces wild camp ground for sites for 10/24 thru 10/28. i see that there is only 1 site left for the fall dates. now the week after they look to have almost all sites available. there must be a large event the week of the fall dates.  i also checked cowboy for 10/31 thru 11/4 and 622 thru 635 are open.

the only other option will be the new camp ground.  i am not sure what is going on that weekend but it has blanketed pretty much all the camp sites.

I'm at LS now . It doesn't appear that there has been anything done in the last month to America Oasis. They need to get moving.

Anyway, I like the 36-17 Sand Blasters. The difference is night and day over the 33-17 I was running. Much more traction and I'm sure those following me will be a bit more sandy. The car handles a lot better now also. I would never have thought I would see that  big of a difference .

On a side note coolant temps were 195-210 and the AC was great. So far the new alternator set up is working well also.

At this point in time, to the best of my knowledge, Mike, deep Busch, enemy are staying at cowboy camp. Myself and group, Allan and group, brian s, and Adam all have sites at plum crazy camp so we can stay till sat morning. I tried to reach brian n over the weekend but he was busy.. not sure which location your staying at brian n. Anna at the main number for America's oasis knows my name. If you choose to stay at plum crazy then call her and tell her you want a spot with us using my name. Deepbusch, you and Mike change your minds then do the same. As we all know, Friday and sats were all booked at cowboy. I don't want to loose a whole weeks vacation for that.

I agree!

No one was hurt ( by luck lol)  and the rail drove on the trailer.  Didnt shift 3 or 4th or reverse anymore  :nw and brakes were almost a 3 pump pedal but I drove onto the trailer.

Scott installed a urethane bushing, shifter coupler to the nose cone. 20 years and it fell apart. I do not know exactly but the pedals will bleed solid and after a few pumps they go soft then to 2 pump. I don't know if the piston in the master cyl is allowing a bubble to wick by but there are no leaks I. The line. This was not an issue in the spring. The clutch was doing it so I swapped the slave out and problem solved. Didnt get a lot of run time in the spring though.  With the imca legal afford fuel tank that kept rupturing and all.

Sucking air on pedal return or caliper retraction .  Most likely master cylinder

Make sure no restriction in fill port in the bottom of the reservoir also. Small restriction can cause air to suck past cup yet still let some fluid in.

I don't feel confident in my abilities to build new arms, this is really want needs to happen.  Scared about the rest of the arms.  The break is beyond me, not even on a weld.  About 1.5" away from a weld.   Wondering if the chrome process had anything to do with weakening the material.

Anyone up for building a new set of arms for me?    Drowning

i cannot expand the pic for some reason. is that a small amount of rust in the break edge of that tube?

sadly i am un able to weld anything right now.  there are several not far from you that can . will need to pull the lower arm off the other side to make a fixture from it.

right before yourself and adam pulled up to ask if i wanted to go out for a run....... i had just returned with 2 pump brakes.  i told the boys they could take it out but needed to bleed the brakes and i needed to flush my eyes out  cause the front tire flung sand up that got behind my goggles. would like to see a link to the goggles you wear fabr.  the boys came walking up as i was walking to scotts rail and i thought, wth , why am i doing this ! i handed the boys the wrenches and fluid and said good luck  :m it's the front brakes with the issue too. they didn't understand why at first but i requested on the 2nd go round that they only bleed the front brakes. that way if it fades out again we will know which side and they did fade out again. don't see any debris in the bottoms. they did sit for 8 or 9 years though.

i know they sell rebuild kits but probably just replace both master cyl's to be safe.  or i should say they can next time they are back  ;) ;) ;D ;D :m

Sitting for 8-9 years especially if it was not stored in a climate controlled environment might have allowed any moisture in the aluminum master cylinder to have caused minor corrosion/pitting of the bore and that is where the air is getting into the system without showing any leaks.I'd bet a few dollars on it. Same could have occurred in the caliper bores as well. Brake fluids are hygroscopic and absorb water just like ethanol. It isn't seen but it is there and in enough concentration WILL cause issues.

I believe Mike and mitch know Brian's brother too.  Anyone think a 2nd tube under slung with ladder like bracing in some form, on those rears, would add more strength to keep that from happening again?

right before yourself and adam pulled up to ask if i wanted to go out for a run....... i had just returned with 2 pump brakes.  i told the boys they could take it out but needed to bleed the brakes and i needed to flush my eyes out  cause the front tire flung sand up that got behind my goggles. would like to see a link to the goggles you wear fabr.  the boys came walking up as i was walking to scotts rail and i thought, wth , why am i doing this ! i handed the boys the wrenches and fluid and said good luck  :m it's the front brakes with the issue too. they didn't understand why at first but i requested on the 2nd go round that they only bleed the front brakes. that way if it fades out again we will know which side and they did fade out again. don't see any debris in the bottoms. they did sit for 8 or 9 years though.

i know they sell rebuild kits but probably just replace both master cyl's to be safe.  or i should say they can next time they are back  ;) ;) ;D ;D :m

In a non insulated garage. Rear calipers are not aluminum, cheap eco disc brake 4 bolt kit from empire. Front brake calipers are aluminum as well as masters. I didn't know brake fluid was like e85 on water absorption. Good to know.

I would purge all old brake fluid from system and fill with new then replace/rebuild master and calipers.I'd bet that is the root of the issue.

Purged a full qt between both master cyl's bleeding them for the spring trip. Purged a full res again for  both the morning you were there and again that afternoon on the front one. Funny part is, after sitting from the spring trip, that new fluid was already chaulk board black In the res. Not even 6 months old, didn't see 2 hrs of run time, not real heat to it so has to be oxidation from the aluminum.

Generalg.    That did suck for sure. Stopped by your camp in my can am phone booth to say. Stopped a couple of times but missed ya both times. So are going to make a jug and build your own new arm or is there another source?

I don't feel confident in my abilities to build new arms, this is really want needs to happen.  Scared about the rest of the arms.  The break is beyond me, not even on a weld.  About 1.5" away from a weld.   Wondering if the chrome process had anything to do with weakening the material.

Anyone up for building a new set of arms for me?    Drowning

years ago, a mechanical engineer told me not to have structural parts chrome plated. he said it negatively effected the parts. i dont remember what exactly was explained, just took him at his word and had everything alumi coated. its sort of a close 2nd. i dont blame you for questioning the rest of the arms either. the uppers take less load then the lowers. maybe make new lowers our of one wall thicker and alumi coat or powder coat black or red and leave the uppers chrome??

Short read that may shed some light on that.

Hydrogen embrittlement?

sounds right and yourself and mike would have more insight into that then myself.

great article for sure!

this one passage says alot until itself.

The active hydrogen can embrittle both the chromium deposit and the steel part being plated. When hydrogen enters steel, it can cause a loss of ductility, a loss of load carrying ability and/or microscopic cracks and failures at applied stresses below the normal design strength of the steel.

the rest of the article is important as well. especially if the chormolly they are made out of exceeds the tensile strength of 1000 MPa or higher. the baking procedure they discuss in the article will add cost to the plating and probably not something that was done my too many building. may not even have been know by many either especially if the companys rep didn't know or ask what material they were plating. all my opinnion of course.

I'm betting the chroming process is what led to the failure along with these cars taking a beating far beyond what most will ever see.

IF I had the time I would offer to build them. I have too much now to do.
