Need opinions
« on: August 15, 2010, 07:00:27 PM »
I am going to try an axle, axle carrier combination. I want to use an early VW watercooled axle with a Polaris bearing carrier. The problem is the Polaris bearing carrier has a larger bearing than the VW. The question is would I be better off making a spacer for the bearing or for the axle? The VW axle is smaller than the Polaris axle. The polaris bearing is 74mm od, 40mm id. The VW bearing is 67mm od, 37mm id. Opinions please. I have tried to find a bearing that is the correct od and id. Tim

I'm lost and a couple pics are worth a couple thousand words.  ;D ;D drowning

Sounds like a 3mm bearing shim spacer needs to be turned out on the lathe.

A shim with a 40mm OD and a 37mm inside Diameter should fit the Polaris bearing carrier and hold the VW shaft straight in it.

Make it out of steel and not aluminum if its gonna carry full loads ofthe vehicle.

Is the VW spindle shaft long enough to go all the way thru the Polaris hub?

Sorry its late and I had a long day and a brain fart. It needs to be a 1.5 mm thick round shim. If it could be turned that thin I guess..

I will try to get pictures tomorrow. I couldn't decide whether to space bearing or space shaft. I believe the shaft will be long enough, the Polaris bearing is 40mm long and VW bearing is 38mm long. Tim
