Title: EPS Mounting
Post by: DeepBusch69 on February 23, 2018, 02:19:31 PM
I'm getting my EPS mounted.  I have it bolted in on the bottom, was thinking I need to tie it in from the top also.  How have you guys mounted yours?  I don't want to overkill it, but that usually works out best.

Good reply enemy!   LMAO

thanks.   mine needs another bracket after looking longer.  too much vibration and leverage

Too late now but I'd have mounted it closer to the steering wheel if possible. I agree you need something at the top of the mounting plate.

why closer to the steering wheel? just wondering as i pondered this before i installed mine. i have a hood though. i just decided in the end i didnt want to hit my knee on it.

Many buggies have more available tubes to hang it from up there. Many don't though. I think Mitch's car does but I may be remembering wrong. It really makes no difference where you mount it when it comes to how it performs.

allen moved his batt and 5 gal fuel tank up the nose to shift weight.     i didn't save any of the pics i took of my eps when i installed it. i thought i posted pics but didn't see them in the build thread either. looks good so far just brace it for rotational force and getting bounce back and fourth and you'll be good.

I have mine mounted just off the 3 bolts. have not seen a problem. as for location. I have seen them mounted right of the rack and right at the steering wheel. to me its personal preference

Found a forum thread that was very informative with pictures and wiring diagrams on some of the EPS units out there, maybe some will get some use out of it--> http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/mod-custom-forum/1008722-electric-steering-fail-safe-no-ebay-module-needed-pics-videos.html#/topics/1008722 (http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/mod-custom-forum/1008722-electric-steering-fail-safe-no-ebay-module-needed-pics-videos.html#/topics/1008722)

Have to register to view the stuff, but well worth it.

good info there. a shame he didnt include amp draw info too. i think i looked at the yaris way back and i believe it is the low amp draw model.  idk if they work in fail safe mode. if theres an ebay controller from the guy i bought mine from then its a good $55 free shipping spent!

have to log in for pictures but here's the print

Electric Steering with Fail-Safe: No eBay module needed. Pics & Videos !
It has been couple of years since I first posted the Electric Steering idea. My car has progressed far enough and I was ready for it as well so I though I would share the direction I went.

Couple of months ago, I was at my location pic-a-part and ran into a 2010 Toyota Corolla and a 2009 Toyota Prius and I pulled both of them and took a risk. To my amazement, both of these worked on the bench with only the Ignition On, heavy gauge Power and Ground. That's it! 3 wire connection. After further digging and finding the service manuals, I found that these units go in to a Fail-Safe mode and provide steering effort that is just about right when the CAN BUS not present in about 10 seconds. No eBay module needed!

I was not done. I pulled a 2014 Kia Soul EPS, a 2010 Nissan Cube and a 2008 Nissan Versa and all worked in a Fail-Safe mode and without the eBay module. I also pulled a 2007 Toyota Yaris that also works in fail safe mode but requires a VSS signal.

The biggest advantage is obviously they all work in fail safe mode but also they have a remotely mounted ECU that can be unplugged. It's important to get the ECU when pulling the Electric Steering Column.

My testing leads me to believe that just about any Japanese car brand with Electric Steering works in Fail-Safe mode. I did test the Chevy Cobalt and does not work in Fail-Safe just like Saturn Vue even though they are all made by Koyo. For me, I would trust any EPS working in Fail-Safe mode as intended by the manufacture over adding external non-factory module. Lots of testing and development goes on in to these systems.

Below is the list of Car that I know of that has Fail-Safe Electric Steering:

2004-2009 Toyota Prius
2009-2013 Toyota Corolla
2006-2011 Toyota Yaris - (With ABS works in Fail-Safe).
2006-2011 Toyota Yaris - (Non-ABS needs VSS signal or flashing LED)
2007-2009 Nissan Versa
2009-2012 Nissan Cube
2012-2014 Kia Soul

I will be updating this list as I find more information.

mine was off a saturn vue 2003. had to run the black box with the adjustable sensitivity knob. I did away with the adjustment. i found it was always turned all the way up.  this is my 2nd unit. burned the first one up at the car wash or river.   you have to seal the circuit  board / box. I just flex sealed mine new one. time will tell how well it works. this is the only draw back i have found.  the after marked ones have the sealed box/board.
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: dsrace on February 27, 2018, 03:44:50 PM
as a precaution i sealed what i could with silicone. i know that the hole behind the box is a vent hole so i used some lawnmower air filter material and suffed that in the hole for use in the sand. now having looked inside thousands upon thousands of electric window motors lol  and now taking apart the vue eps, i can say these eps's are overgrown window motors. now i will say the larger the "plastic gear" inside it the stronger that unit is. think about how much abuse that plastic gear is handling!   for engines like carls or jon's, dougs , fabr's etc etc bike, w/o an alternator the lower amp units would be better. i would bet an eps off a utv would be a good choice. those 1000 cc utv's are stock 1400 lbs to 2k lbs in a 2 seater on the show room floor and thousands of them totaled out there! that matrix or prius eps might be a good solution as i bet there lower amperage too.

yaris still uses a 50 amp fuse from factory. probably would take a good shot to the wheel at full assist to every draw that.

$497 on ebay with free shipping lol but that better be a brand new eps for that money! i say that as i'm only in the saturn vue model for $160 with the controller.

just buying a used rzr eps is $200 but still need the shafts and control box. so unless one can find a salvage yard to get it all for $250....well $500 isn't too bad!

Title: Re: EPS Mounting

never put a amp clamp on it. ran 8 gage all the way to battery.
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: dsrace on March 13, 2018, 06:49:27 AM
gm uses a 50 amp fuse on the eps. the controller has a thermal switch that is supposed to trip at 45 amp i think. the factory wire gauge that came with mine as i bought the whole colomn was 8g.  i didnt realize that until after i had ran the wire. so i left the 10g in but i only run the controller at 50% to 75% assist so prob ok. full assist is a bit to touchy for me on gravel roads. 50% works best there and between 50% and 75% works perfect for me in the sand.

Thanks.  I was told that my eps runs 18.3 amps.  It only came with a 12 gauge wire, but it is about a foot short getting to the power box.  But then they have a 40amp fuse at the motor.  That doesn’t seem to match up?
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: dsrace on March 13, 2018, 10:19:05 AM
which eps do you have? it could be max 40 amps at full assist and 18.3 running at min? looking back on page 1 at all that info most of those are 40 to 80 amp fuses. it would be interesting to know what you have. i assume it came from pacific customs like 78crews did?
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: DeepBusch69 on March 13, 2018, 10:28:01 AM
Yes, it is a pacific customs.  No adjustment on assist which is good by me.
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: dsrace on March 13, 2018, 10:34:45 AM
from what i can see online, amp draw is determined but amount of load put to the motor. obviously heavier vehicles get stronger motors that pull more amps but even then it will only pull so many until you apply a huge load. put the 40 amp fuse in and if it blows you know you need a 50 amp. i doubt you'll have issues with it to be honest but it would still be interesting to know what it was actually built for as in weight class of automobile.

on another note......i know the assist adjust-ability isn't for everyone but i pre fer it myself as it allows me to dial in exactly what i need for a particular terrain.

is this the one? https://www.pacificcustoms.com/ac498700.html

i bought the hole column from a salvage yard for $100 (i'm in it $155 with variable controller) but this is what i bought and use https://www.ebay.com/itm/2002-2007-Saturn-Vue-Equinox-Electric-Power-Steering-EPS-Steering-Assist/273082496481?hash=item3f94fc35e1:g:VvUAAOSwySlaGcAn&vxp=mtr

and the variable adjuster for it  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Saturn-Vue-Chevy-Equinox-Electric-power-steering-electronic-controller-box-EPAS/142461763061?hash=item212b61fdf5:g:DRQAAOSwr7tZfvQP&vxp=mtr

Yes, that is the one.  Yours is a good deal for the money, but I was worried about sand and water since these are usually inside the Saturns.  Did you do anything for sand seals on the shaft?  Seal the electric control box?  I know Dave's went out on him.  I just used  10 gauge wire and 40 amp breaker, should be good.
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: dsrace on March 13, 2018, 01:10:24 PM
ya i sealed my elect box with silicone and used a master cyl rubber boot on the shaft bearing that wasnt sealed to keep sand out.

Post by: big dave on March 13, 2018, 01:22:16 PM
I used a old shifter boot cut down to seal my bearing. thought that was the place it was binding last time we all was at LS. ended up being the mount I have on the 1 1/2 tube to the steering shaft at the steering wheel.
Title: Re: EPS Mounting
Post by: dsrace on March 13, 2018, 02:21:49 PM
ya basically same boot except came off a master cyl off a chevy. theres a small vent hole in the eps body and i glued a peice of a scotch bright pad in the hole to let air out but keep sand out. my steering shaft mount has a bearing in it but i grease it once a year.

The foot is doing better every day, no crutches, just a walking boot now.  The car is ready to load in the trailer.  I was changing the oil, and noticed a motor mount bolt and bushing were AWOL.  Glad I spotted that.  Don’t know how long it has been missing?
