SS CV Boot Bands
« on: August 07, 2010, 04:34:13 PM »
Didn't think I'd like them but after I used the cheapo band tool I'm pretty damn impressed. BTW,save your money on a "premium" band tool. NOT NEEDED AT ALL. The cheapo is great as is.

i dont know how you got those to clamp down... i hate the effin things.  first set you couldnt pull tight with that cheapo banding tool, because it would pull the "clamping" piece apart....    finally got a set on tight and they came apart while driving..  i want the oem factory kind, with the little hooks, and then the crimping tool to tighten them.

These work perfectly well. No issues at all. EASY to install with the cheapo tool also. No reason you should have had any trouble.

I use them and have used both the premium tool as well as the cheapo. The premium one is worth it if you're not doing just one set on one car. It saves about 30-45 seconds per clamp having the cutter built in.

I have a bunch BTW as well as the cheapo tools.

The cheapo is the only one that will work on the midboard hubs. The premium tool is the cats ass otherwise.

There are too types of economy tools I have seen. One of them will probably not work on the mid boards if the premium tool does not. The one you have is probably folded out of one piece of metal. The other style is two plates welded together with the seam on the sides making it wide.

Ya,I posted a pic in another thread here somewhere. Lisle brand does the job just fine if you modify the length of the take up spool to just the width of the band. Most people have trouble with boots by not making sure thwe sealing surfaces are lube free before putting on the band. If there's any lube on the mating surfaces there's trouble brewing. Needs to be clean and lube free to not slip .

I grabbed an axle shaft out of a BMW a while back... size of a 930 but thinner. Is that what you guys are talking about? I think this would be the way for me to go in the RC car, where would we get some?

Aslo the source for the 'micro' stubs? I'm guessing the Jeep ones won't work as the splines are not 930 type, so I need the s-10 ones or f-150 ones?

You could use EMPI micro stubs for a 930 if the BMW joints are the same as a 930. A Jeep and an F-150 do not have a separate micro stub. The CV and stub axle are one piece. An Empi Micro Stub for a 930 will press fit into an F-150 wheel hub/bearing.
