Has anyone made exhaust heat shields, how much space between the pipe and the shield, how thick is the shield materail. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Judging from double wall vent pipe it doesn't need to be much gap at all. Just enough for airflow.

You can also get header wrap at any performance auto parts store that keeps the heat in the exhaust (is said to help make more power too) but it also give the heat shield less heat to deal with and the wrap is pretty thin.
Your mission isn't to dive feet first into hell, but to make sure its crowded when you get there.

I priced some wrap the other day for my skid loader.  1" by 50ft long was about $35 at the local parts store.

I've given boost plenty of good quotes the last couple of days. He's just fixated on his gay thinking. LOL!!!

I heat wrapped my headers on the rail. You can touch the headers pretty soon after shutting down. Got it at summit racing along with the stainless zip ties.

The only problem with heat tape is if you get it muddy.....
or wet often
and the problem with an actual sheild is the rattling and vibration... I used to weld a couple of washers on each corner and roll roll the sheild to fit tight on both ends of the pipe to keep tension on the sheild and then tack weld to yhe pipe

Yeah, rust will be the headers enemy. Oh wait,I used SS for the entire exhaust.  ;D ;D I KNEW there was a reason I spent the extra money.

I guarantee you this much-the GOOD header wrap is some tough stuff. Remember BBQ buggy? Hell 1/2 of the busa was melted away but the header wrap is completely intact still to this day sitting outside the shop in the weather.

Yours was small diameter pipes...
I ran all 2 strokes.... I seemd to have problems with tape only on the belly of the pipes, never on the small ends...The belly of the pipe is what's always closest to the seat
I think snoopy is planning sled power too
