Title: Suby turbo conversion
Post by: BrianN on February 23, 2020, 09:04:33 PM
Getting closer to "dyno time". Adding a small turbo and low boost. Waiting on lines and fittings for e85 conversion, also. Then build my fuel rails. Switching to Haltec ecu for more options. dsrace knows what I am talking about!!! Spring gathering is  still my goal.

nice work! you will thoroughly enjoy the build when it's all wrapped up!   that haltec is a far far superior ecu and will delete the west coast issues  :m :m :m :m

I gotta do some measuring at the spring gathering. I'm seriously considering doing a subi conversion of my buggy.I think I have plenty of room-maybe.

Looking good on the new turbo.  I will be interested in how you like the Haltec ECU and how friendly it is for tuning.

Go for it fabr, as they say, “the world is flat”.

in the busa rail?? if so then you have plenty of room! that inline 4 cyl is longer than the suby and you already have the lengt of a trans.

I'm concerned about exhaust clearance.

This is how my headers turned out. They are v-band clamped in the center for installation.  Mid engine  car so they run in front of motor, and out the back of the passenger side. Very thin walled stainless,  so they are heavily wrapped. Very glad they are finished. What a nightmare to get all the bends aligned, then of course, they move after welding. I am a firm believer that exhaust is a special talent. (That I don't have!!)

Built a set of fuel rails. My 3rd try at injectors failed. Thought I  found someone who understood my situation.  Received them yesterday.  Great, but missing a o-ring and the pigtails!

well atleast the injectors showed up?? lol i am shocked at the troubles you have had with support for boosting a suby engine. as popular as they are one would think theres plenty of aftermarket support but apperantly not. no wealth of info on the forums either but looks like suby made changes every 6 months on most lol   fuel rails look great! now call the company and tell them to put the o rings and pig tales in a envelope and overnight them.

A person would think the merchant would know whether or not the order was filled before shipping.  Where'd you buy them from-Uncle Bob's EFI and Janitorial Supply???

i have spoken with brian a few times.  where i cannot answer your question as i dont know i can say the 1st place was outfront. they said they could set him up with the correct ones and would let him know. they stopped answering calls or returning messages. i personally think they just want to sell complete motors.

Fuel rails are very simple and plain. My access to machine shops is very limited right now. I got these from Fuel injectors connection. I sent 2 messages and just received a shipping notice.  Just hope it is the stuff I need. Don't let dsrace fool you. He has spent about a zillion hours on the phone with me, answering my questions!! I couldn't have gotten to this point without him.

I figure the chance that everything is correct is about 1%, but I  tried.

My last remark DOES NOT reflect the advice and help I received. I needed to clear that up.

Fabr, would you remind me what type of fire extinguisher you thought worked best for ethanol fires? I remember you talking about it in a previous post.  I asked a firefighter what they used, and he didn't even know. I found one type that was used exclusively for alcohol (forget the type) but it was horribly expensive.

I just found a 2.5 gallon AR-AFFF extinguisher for $220.00. It says 6 year warranty, so I guess it doesn't expire too quickly. This project is my first go-around working with ethanol and plumbing,  so it might be a good investment to ease my mind a little. Your thoughts?

I bought of the "halon" on board type but the one you posted is best. Alcohol Resistant[Aqueous Film Forming type is most effective on alky. I made my choice on the onboard halon type is due to being non messy. No cleanup. I also have 2 regular dry chemical type on board as backup.

well done.  now there is always a chance for atleast 1 bad connection or one crossed connection. dont get frustrated if there is and i know you cannot  start the car as you do not have a  base tune. so which ever dyno shop you can get into this week, will have to work with you on that issue.....IF it happens. i think you spent enough time, triple checked each connection, so i am betting its all correct.

i spent the last 2 days working on what i could with what i have, to prep for the trip. no way i'll get it all done before the trip but all i really need is the rail, some tools, beef/pork to naw on and a shitter to send returns too LMAO  LMAO

i know i have a f350 duallly but i believe in belts and suspenders  ;D so i bought an anderson weight dist anti sway hitch system. got that installed yesterday. took a few trys to get the trailer .5" nose down and front end of my truck 1" higher than the rear. i found out my rear leaf springs are weak. they are from 1999 and spent 80% of its life towing a fifthwheel both by myself and 1st owner. so i had to put 25 psi in my air bags to min squat. so now i need to load the rail and run to the cat scale to weigh in. dont have to weigh in but i want to know i am with in 10 to 15% tounge.  i also added max air power roof vents with integrated hoods. the stock power vents were closer to computer cooling fans than exh fans!

We need to start a dyno discussion.

I am still hopeful. I dropped off a laptop with Haltech software installed at Toyspeed,  but it is too slow. He will use theirs if I don't get a better one in time. My buggy is on a trailer, ready to drop off. He said he will let me know when he can start. He can't actually open until the 30th, but hopefully he will sneak it in. Remind me when you will be at the dunes.

I am trying to distract my mind from the dunes by watching tv. Crap, not working. The answer to a puzzle on Wheel of Fortune for "What are you doing?" was "Driving a Dunebuggy". You can't make this stuff up!

Cool on the "driving a dune buggy" answer.  To break a few minutes of boredom, I'll throw in a Dumont dune video.  And good luck with the tune and dyno.  carry on
