Power steering box bender.
« on: March 17, 2011, 03:44:02 PM »
I've had this idea to use a power steering box/pump to drive a tubing bender for quite some time.Recently a member on OFN,Vern Lee was ballsy enough to give it a try.So far it seems like he is very happy with it and I thank him again for testing my idea.(even though I knew it would work.)Most of this idea was discussed on another board, here is a link that thread.

It was also requestd that I post the pics here so that members here dont have to join another board. Some of these pics were already posted somewhere here but I dont remember where. Some of these pics are of Verns bender, hopefully he doesnt have a problem with me posting them here.If he does ,I will remove them. One of the sketches is a little hard to see but its a scan so nothing I can do about it.

Heres the link to OFN also, basically the same as here but Vern is a member there so he can answer any questions I cant.

Speechless? No, links are no good.

IF it will bend as fast as you can spin the handle, then I would think you could either change the pulley ratios or go with a smaller displacement pump.  Doing so might cost you a little speed, but would allow for a smaller motor running off 110 instead of the 220 one he had to fit.
I would also think the running the dies on a well supported shaft and driving the end of that shaft would be a stronger design than running the dies right on the steering box output shaft.
The big question though, is will a pick up steering box have enough power?  Or is a big truck box a necessity.

You nailed it! I'm going to say yes.I'll find out soon,I'm planing on finally doing some mock-up tests.

I'm sticking with the die on the shaft,I dont want any extra moving parts.
