My Uncle flew P38 reconnaissance flights over Germany in WWII.  The link suggests that Spitfires were used, but about 1000 P38 were for recon. 

The only real story I ever heard about his flying was that one day he was engaged by two German fighter planes.  He had no weapons as the guns would have been removed for the photo equipment.  He banked and turned into them, essentially playing chicken with them.  They broke off the attack given the P38's gun power (of which he had none) and he flew back to England to complete the mission.  He joined the RAF prior to the US involvement in the war so he could learn to fly.  He managed to make it through the entire war without being shot down.

great pics..
here are a few from my grandfather taken over maui hawaii during WWII they are of the dauntless dive bombers and a trainer, on the back of the photos they say "top secret", "not for public realese". Don't know how he got them, Maui had a large naval air staition during the war and was considered the "top gun" of it's era.
